Chapter 3 - The Missing Ribbon

Elena stared at the blood-stained purple hair ribbon resting beside the rusted lockbox. Her mind raced, trying to find a logical explanation. Lily had lost her favorite ribbon last Tuesday during a walk in the neighborhood park three miles away. How on earth did it end up sealed inside a kitchen wall cavity that hadn't been opened in decades?
"That's my ribbon," Lily said softly, pointing a small finger at the counter. The toddler didn't look scared; she looked almost expectant, as if she had been waiting for the box to reveal its contents.
"No, it's not," Clara lied quickly, though her voice lacked conviction. She reached out to grab the fabric, but Elena gently slapped her hand away.
"Don't touch it, Clara," Elena ordered, her tone stern. She pulled the two girls back from the counter, her eyes darting toward the hallway. The house felt suddenly oppressive, the walls closing in. "Go to the living room. Right now. Both of you."
"Mom, you're freaking out," Clara protested, backing away slowly while keeping her eyes locked on the metal box. "It's just an old box. People lose things. Maybe the previous owners dropped it during a renovation."
"A renovation that sealed a ribbon my toddler lost last week?" Elena snapped, her composure cracking under the weight of the impossible coincidence. "Go!"
As the girls hurried into the living room, Elena turned back to the counter. She grabbed a heavy kitchen knife from the wooden block, her hands trembling as she wedged the tip into the rusted lock of the metal box. With a sharp twist, the old latch snapped with a loud, metallic crack that echoed through the quiet house like a gunshot.
Elena lifted the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of yellowed newspaper clippings from 1994, was an old cassette tape, a tarnished silver locket, and a child’s leather shoe. But what made Elena gasp and drop the knife was the photograph pinned to the inside of the lid. It was a polaroid of her own kitchen, taken from the exact angle she was standing right now. Except, in the photo, a pale woman with long dark hair was standing right where Clara had been standing a few minutes ago, staring directly into the camera with terrified eyes.
Elena spun around, her heart pounding in her ears. The kitchen was empty. But as she looked down at the wooden floor, she noticed something new. Scratched deeply into the floorboards beneath the scattered plastic cups were words written in fresh, wet dirt.
