Chapter 14 - The Final Revelation

Before Elena could run downstairs, the bedroom door swung shut by itself with a heavy thud, the lock turning from the inside with a loud, metallic click.

"Mom! The door's stuck!" Clara cried, throwing her weight against the wood, but it wouldn't budge.

A chilling wind swept through the master bedroom, extinguishing the bedside lamps and plunging the room into total darkness, save for the bright blue glow emanating from the open closet shaft. From inside that dark hole, a small pair of arms reached up, and Lily climbed out into the bedroom, unharmed, holding a small, old-fashioned music box.

Lily walked calmly over to Elena, holding out the music box. Her red hair was messy, and her beige pants were covered in fresh dirt, but her eyes were clear and completely back to normal.

"The lady said thank you," Lily whispered innocently, setting the music box on the floor.

Elena knelt down and pulled both girls into a tight, desperate embrace, her heart hammering against her ribs. "We're getting out of here. Right now. Through the window if we have to."

Clara nodded, her face stained with tears, but as she reached for the window latch, it frosted over instantly, sealing the glass shut.

Suddenly, the music box on the floor popped open by itself. Instead of a mechanical tune, a soft, maternal voice filled the room, speaking not from the box, but echoing gently from all four walls of the house.

Thank you for finding me. The walls can finally rest.

The heavy deadbolt on the bedroom door clicked open, and the door swung wide on its own, revealing the bright, sunlit hallway outside. Downstairs, the front door opened, and Detective Miller’s voice called up the stairs.

"Mrs. Vance? Are you up there? We found something in your foundation wall!"

Elena didn't waste a single second. She grabbed Clara’s hand, scooped Lily up into her arms, and bolted out of the master bedroom, running down the stairs and out the front door into the warm afternoon sun.

Detective Miller was standing on the front lawn, looking pale, holding a tarnished silver locket and a framed photograph of a young woman who looked remarkably like Elena herself.

"Mrs. Vance," Miller said, his voice shaking slightly. "The remains across the street... and the remains we just found encased in the concrete foundation of your front porch... they belong to Sarah Sterling. She was the original owner of this land before the subdivision was built. And according to these records... she was your maternal grandmother."
