Chapter 4 - The Whispering Walls

Elena dropped to her knees, her fingers touching the wet dirt on the wooden floorboards. It smeared easily, dark and rich, smelling faintly of turned earth and rain. How had dirt appeared inside a thoroughly cleaned, modern kitchen in the middle of a dry afternoon? She looked up at the open cabinet doors, then back at the message scrawled across the floor.
"Mom?" Clara's voice called out hesitantly from the living room doorway. "Why is it so cold in here all of a sudden?"
Elena stood up quickly, wiping her hand on her beige sweatshirt. She forced a strained, reassuring smile, though her chest felt tight. "It's just the draft from the open cabinet, sweetie. Everything's fine."
Clara walked into the kitchen, her eyes immediately dropping to the floor. She gasped, freezing in her tracks. "Did you write that?"
"No," Elena said firmly. "Clara, I need you to listen to me. We are going to pack a few bags and stay at a hotel tonight. Just for a couple of days while I... while I check the plumbing or something."
"You're lying," Clara whispered, her defensive facade crumbling entirely. Tears welled up in her eyes, matching the earlier distress of her little sister. "The house is doing this. Lily knew it before it even happened. She pointed at the cabinet before the cups fell. How did she know, Mom?"
Before Elena could answer, Lily toddled into the kitchen, holding something behind her back. The toddler’s face wore a strange, knowing smirk that didn't belong on a two-year-old child.
"Lily, what do you have?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a nervous whisper.
Lily slowly brought her hands forward. Resting in her small palms was the tarnished silver locket from the rusted lockbox—the locket Elena had just placed on the counter. The metal box was still closed across the room.
"It opened itself," Lily said simply, her voice hollow and distant, devoid of normal childlike cadence. "The lady inside the wall said it's time to give it back."
Elena felt the room spin. She stepped forward, kneeling to eye level with her youngest daughter, her hands trembling as she reached for the locket. "Lily, honey, who told you that? Who is the lady?"
Lily didn't answer. Instead, she pointed a tiny finger directly over Elena’s shoulder, toward the dark, open cavity inside the kitchen cabinet.

Elena slowly turned her head to look. Staring back at her from the pitch-black void inside the wall was a pale, translucent face with long dark hair, smiling wide with hollow eyes.
