Chapter 7: The Unseen Witness

Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs as she stared at the maid in the dim blue glow of the server racks. For a terrifying second, the socialite felt entirely stripped of her armor, reduced to a trespasser in her own home. She forced her shoulders back, summoning every ounce of aristocratic haughtiness she possessed to mask her panic.

"I am reviewing household security, Clara. That happens to be my prerogative as the owner of this estate," Eleanor said, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly over the keyboard.

Clara pushed off the doorframe and walked slowly into the server room, her footsteps echoing softly on the concrete floor. She didn't look like a subordinate right now; she moved with the calm assurance of someone holding all the winning cards. She leaned over the console, her eyes scanning the scrolling lines of code and file directories on the monitor.

"You're not looking at household security, Mrs. Vance. You're looking at the file labeled 'Vance_Archive_09'," Clara said quietly, pointing a finger directly at a hidden directory Eleanor hadn't even noticed. "That folder isn't part of the standard house feed. It's a localized, encrypted drive that Mr. Vance installed two years ago. Only he—and now, technically, me—has root access to it."

Eleanor froze. "What are you talking about? Julian said the system was standard."

"Mr. Vance lies a lot," Clara said matter-of-factly. "About many things. Not just politics. I’ve worked in three different estates on this street before taking this job. I know how wealthy men operate when they're hiding a second set of books—or a second life."

Eleanor stared at the maid, the initial anger giving way to a cold, creeping dread. "Why are you telling me this? If you hate us as much as you pretend to, why not just quit and let us rot?"

"I don't hate you, Mrs. Vance. I pity you," Clara replied, her voice losing its defensive edge and softening into something dangerously empathetic. "You think you're the master of this house, but you're just another piece on Mr. Vance's chessboard. He didn't just find that necklace behind the clock by accident the other night. He put it there. And he used you as the fall guy for whatever game he's playing with his campaign donors."

The words hit Eleanor like a physical blow. The missing memories, the lost hours, the terrifying feeling of unreality—it wasn't just her failing mind. It was an engineered reality. Julian had been drugging her, manipulating her medical prescriptions, slowly convincing her she was losing her sanity so she would never question his financial or political maneuvers.
