Chapter 5: The Morning After

Morning arrived without the comfort of warmth. Pale gray sunlight filtered through the heavy velvet drapes of the master bedroom, illuminating dust motes dancing in the sterile air. Eleanor sat at her mahogany vanity, applying a careful layer of foundation to mask the dark circles under her eyes. In the mirror, her reflection looked fragile, a porcelain doll held together by hairspray and expensive cosmetics. Julian stood behind her in a crisp white dress shirt, buttoning his cuffs with practiced precision.
"Clara is downstairs," Julian said, his voice flat as he watched her through the glass. "She wants to speak with us before she begins her morning duties. I told her we would meet her in the kitchen."
Eleanor paused, her makeup sponge hovering near her cheekbone. "I apologized last night, Julian. Do I need to grovel to the domestic staff now? Is that part of your public relations strategy?"
"It's about basic human decency, Eleanor, which you seem to misplace whenever it becomes inconvenient," Julian replied, not raising his voice, which made the reprimand sting all the worse. "She has every right to quit. If she leaves, the rumor mill in this neighborhood starts churning. People talk. You know how the country club circuit operates. A maid walking out abruptly after a theft accusation raises questions we cannot afford to answer right now."
Eleanor set the sponge down with a sharp clack. She stood up, smoothing the front of her tailored grey wool skirt. "Fine. Let's go appease the help."
When they entered the sunlit country kitchen, Clara was standing by the center island, pouring hot water into a ceramic mug. She had already changed into a fresh grey uniform, her braided updo pristine. She didn't cower when the Vances walked in, but she didn't invite them to sit either. The power dynamic in the room had subtly shifted; the employees no longer viewed the Vances as untouchable gods, but as deeply flawed, volatile employers walking on cracked ice.

"Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance," Clara began, her tone strictly professional, devoid of warmth. "I’ve considered my position. I’m staying, but under new terms. First, my salary is increased by twenty percent, retroactive to the start of the year. Second, all security cameras in the private living quarters and hallways are to be connected to a dual-access terminal where I have administrative view. I will not be framed in my own workplace again."
Julian stared at her, genuinely surprised by the boldness of the ultimatum. He half-expected her to demand a severance package and walk out the door. Instead, she was digging her heels into the very foundation of their fortress.
