Chapter 10: The Gathering Storm

By seven o'clock that evening, the white-pillared foyer was once again alive with the muted hum of high society. Wealthy donors in tailored tuxedos and designer evening gowns milled about beneath the American flag, sipping champagne and discussing the upcoming senatorial primaries. Julian worked the room with effortless charisma, his sharp navy blue tuxedo immaculate, his smile radiant as he accepted handshakes and back-slaps from influential political power brokers.
Upstairs, standing in front of the full-length mirror in her bedroom, Eleanor zipped herself back into the glossy emerald green evening gown. She fastened the sparkling necklace around her throat—the real one, which she had retrieved from Julian's private wall safe while he was downstairs greeting guests. The cold diamonds pressed against her skin like armor.
Clara stood quietly by the doorway, holding a slim leather folder containing printed copies of the downloaded financial ledgers and the server logs. Her braided updo was neat, her grey uniform pressed to perfection.
"Are you ready, Mrs. Vance?" Clara asked softly.
Eleanor turned away from the mirror, her green silk gown whispering against the floor. Her posture was erect, her expression serene, carved from pure resolve. "Let's go greet our guests."
They descended the grand staircase together, stepping out into the bright lights of the foyer just as Julian was wrapping up a conversation near the bottom of the steps. The room quieted slightly as the candidate's elegant wife appeared, her emerald dress commanding the visual focus of everyone present. Julian’s smile hitched for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that only Eleanor and Clara caught—before he smoothly recovered, extending an arm toward her.
"Ah, my wonderful wife has joined us," Julian announced to the surrounding cluster of donors, his voice ringing with practiced warmth. "Despite not feeling well today, she insisted on being here to support our shared vision for the district."

Eleanor took his arm, her fingers resting lightly against his sleeve. She could feel the tense muscles beneath his custom-tailored jacket. "I wouldn't miss this for the world, Julian," she said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent foyer. "Especially not tonight. After all, we have a very special announcement to make regarding our campaign finances."
Julian’s smile tightened, the charm failing to reach his cold, dark eyes. He leaned down, speaking through clenched teeth disguised as a loving husband's murmur. "Eleanor, don't play games tonight. Not here. Not in front of the committee."
