Chapter 6: A Dangerous Alliance

Eleanor’s eyes flashed with indignation, her patrician pride bristling at the sheer audacity of a domestic worker negotiating terms like a corporate board member. "You are in no position to make demands, Clara. You work here—"
"Eleanor, stop," Julian interrupted, holding up a restraining hand. He looked at Clara, recognizing the calculated leverage she held. If Clara walked out with a discrimination lawsuit, his senatorial campaign would die before the primaries even began. He nodded slowly. "Accepted, Clara. Your salary adjustment will be processed by noon, and I’ll have our IT consultant grant you access to the internal network logs today."
Clara gave a single, curt nod. "Thank you, sir. I'll get back to work."
As Clara walked past them toward the pantry, Eleanor glared at her husband. "Have you lost your absolute mind? You just gave a maid administrative access to our security network! She can see everything—every private conversation, every late-night visitor, every secret we keep!"
"She sees what we give her a reason to see," Julian said, lowering his voice as he stepped closer to Eleanor. "And right now, keeping her quiet is cheaper than a congressional scandal. You brought this on us, Eleanor. Every careless action you take requires a messy cleanup."
Once Julian left for his downtown law office, Eleanor found herself pacing the length of the silent kitchen. The walls felt like they were closing in. She needed to know what was on those security logs, and she needed to know why her memory had failed her so completely on the night of the gala. With Julian gone, the house was entirely hers—and Clara’s.
Moving with quiet deliberation, Eleanor made her way down the basement corridor toward the security control room. The heavy oak door was usually locked, but Julian in his haste had left the electronic access panel unlocked. She slipped inside, the hum of mainframe servers filling the cool, dim room. Rows of monitors glowed with blue light, displaying live feeds of the perimeter, the driveways, and the interior hallways.
She sat in the leather swivel chair and began typing into the master terminal, searching for the footage from the night of the gala—not the short clip Julian had shown her, but the full, unedited three-hour archive. As the loading bar ticked slowly across the screen, a shadow fell across the doorway.

Eleanor whipped her head around. Clara stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with her arms crossed, a quiet, knowing smirk playing at the corners of her lips.
"Looking for something else you might have forgotten, Mrs. Vance?" Clara asked softly.
