Chapter 9: Building the Defense

Detective Miller’s pen scratched steadily across the paper as Clara calmly dismantled Eleanor’s pathetic defense with cold, unyielding facts. "Jealousy implies a desire for what she has," Clara said, her voice steady and controlled. "I have spent the last three years auditing the foundation’s accounts voluntarily. I know precisely how much debt Eleanor is in, and I know that the jewels she claimed were 'stolen' from her were actually purchased using embezzled charitable donations intended for pediatric medical research." Miller stopped writing, looking up sharply over the rim of his glasses. "You have proof of this?" he asked, his tone shifting from routine investigator to intensely focused detective.

Clara nodded, reaching into the pocket of her dark blue suit jacket—which she had purposely kept on to maintain her resolve—and retrieving a flash drive. She slid it across the wooden table toward him. "Arthur provided the original ledger last night. I spent the early hours of this morning cross-referencing every single entry with digital bank transfers. Every missing dollar maps directly to Eleanor’s offshore accounts and her personal luxury purchases." Miller picked up the small black drive, weighing it in his palm as if testing the immense gravity of the evidence. "This changes everything," he murmured. "This turns a petty theft accusation into a major federal fraud case."

In the kitchen, Noah had finally begun eating his cereal, the familiar routine helping to ground him, while Lily looked up from her coloring book, sensing the serious tone of the adults. Clara glanced back at them, her heart swelling with fierce maternal devotion. She had protected them in the ballroom, and she would protect them now in the court of law. "Eleanor thought she could intimidate my children and bury the truth under her wealth," Clara said, turning her fierce gaze back to the detective. "She made a fatal miscalculation. I want every single charge pressed to the absolute limit of the law. No plea deals, no quiet settlements." Miller gave a slow, respectful nod, pocketing the flash drive.
