Chapter 5: Gathering the Broken Pieces

The ballroom staff hurried forward with velvet trays to collect the scattered pearls and expensive jewelry from the marble floor, moving with cautious reverence around Clara and her children. The host of the gala, a distinguished older gentleman with silver hair, stepped through the thinning crowd to approach Clara. His expression was a mix of profound gratitude and deep embarrassment. "Mrs. Vance," he began, his voice laced with sincere remorse, "I cannot express how deeply sorry I am for what happened tonight. To think that such a malicious scheme was carried out under my roof, targeting your innocent children... it is unforgivable." Clara stood tall, her posture unyielding as she accepted his apology with measured grace.
"Thank you, Arthur," Clara replied, her tone polite but entirely devoid of warmth. "My children were terrified and publicly humiliated because someone prioritized their own greed over the safety of innocents. An apology is a start, but we both know this goes far deeper than a simple party trick." Arthur nodded solemnly, glancing down at Noah and Lily, who were now clinging quietly to each other’s hands. "Please, allow me to escort you to a private parlor upstairs where the children can rest, and we can discuss how to handle the formal security report." Clara considered the offer for a moment, knowing that staying in the main hall would only invite more vultures disguised as well-wishers.
Clara looked down at Lily’s scraped arm, noting the faint swelling, and then at Noah’s tired eyes. "Lead the way," she agreed quietly. As they walked away from the glittering chandeliers and the whispering crowd, Clara kept a protective arm slung over Noah’s shoulder. The private parlor offered a welcome sanctuary, furnished with plush velvet sofas and a warm fireplace that chased away the chill of the evening. Arthur gently closed the heavy mahogany door behind them, leaving the family in peace. Clara immediately knelt beside a low coffee table, pulling a small first-aid kit from her handbag to tend to Lily’s arm, her movements efficient and deeply comforting to the traumatized children.
