Chapter 6: The Secret in the Ledger

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the upstairs parlor, Arthur stood near the fireplace, holding a worn leather-bound ledger that he had retrieved from his private study. The warmth of the room contrasted sharply with the cold revelation Clara had uncovered downstairs. Noah had fallen asleep on the velvet sofa, his head resting in Clara’s lap as she gently stroked his short brown hair, while Lily played quietly with a string of non-threatening ribbon Arthur had thoughtfully provided. Clara raised her eyes from her sleeping son to meet the troubled gaze of the host. "What is that?" Clara asked, her voice a low, steady hum that barely disturbed the quiet of the room.

Arthur stepped forward, placing the ledger gently on the mahogany table before them. "This, Clara, is why Eleanor targeted you tonight," he explained, his voice heavy with regret. "Eleanor has been embezzling from the charity foundation for the past three years. When the annual audit was announced for this week, she panicked. She needed a scapegoat—someone outside her immediate social circle whose word wouldn't hold weight against hers if things went wrong. She chose your family because she knew you’ve been asking difficult questions about the foundation's missing funds." Clara’s jaw tightened, the pieces of the puzzle snapping violently into place in her mind.

The betrayal cut deep. Clara had dedicated years of volunteer service to that very foundation, believing they were helping underprivileged families, only to discover that someone like Eleanor was using the organization as a personal piggy bank. "She tried to destroy my children just to cover her financial crimes," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper that made Arthur flinch. "She thought she could ruin us and walk away clean." Arthur placed a sympathetic hand on the back of the sofa. "The police have already been given the security footage from the ballroom, along with this ledger. Eleanor’s web of lies is unraveling permanently. But Clara, you need to be careful. Desperate people do dangerous things."
