Chapter 8: The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun broke through the tall Victorian windows of Clara’s suburban home, casting long, golden geometric patterns across the hardwood floors of the living room. It had been less than twelve hours since the chaotic gala, but the safety of their familiar environment brought a welcome sense of normalcy. Noah sat at the kitchen island, a bowl of cereal untouched in front of him as he absentmindedly traced the fading red mark on his cheek. Lily sat beside him, coloring quietly in a thick book of fairy tales, her scraped arm bandaged neatly with a clean gauze pad. Clara stood by the stove, brewing a fresh pot of coffee, her mind already several steps ahead of the day's coming battles.
The sharp ring of the doorbell cut through the morning quiet, causing both children to jump. Noah looked up, his young eyes wide with lingering anxiety, while Lily instinctively reached out to grab the hem of Clara’s blouse. Clara walked calmly to the front door, her hand resting momentarily on the polished brass knob before pulling it open. Standing on the porch was Detective Miller, a tall, weary-looking man in a rumpled gray trench coat holding a leather briefcase. "Mrs. Vance," he greeted respectfully, flashing his badge. "I apologize for the early visit, but given the events of last night, we need to take your official statement regarding the stolen jewelry and the altercation with Eleanor Vance."
Clara stepped aside, welcoming the detective into the warmth of the house. "Please, come in, Detective. The children are still recovering, but we are ready to cooperate fully." Miller stepped into the entryway, his eyes taking in the orderly, peaceful home that contrasted so sharply with the glittering chaos of the ballroom. He sat down at the wooden dining table, pulling out a notepad and a silver pen. Clara seated herself across from him, ensuring she could keep a watchful eye on Noah and Lily in the kitchen. "Eleanor has retained a high-powered defense attorney," Miller began without preamble, flipping his notebook open. "She’s claiming the jewels were slipped into her bag by an unknown third party and that you assaulted her in a fit of jealous rage."
