Chapter 2: The Unraveling of the Clutch

Clara stood directly before Eleanor, her gaze sweeping down to assess the red mark on Noah’s cheek and the raw scrape on Lily’s arm. The maternal instinct radiating from Clara was palpable, grounding her children instantly. Noah reached out to grab the edge of Clara’s dark blue suit jacket, finding immediate safety in her presence, while Lily buried her face in Clara’s hip, muffling her desperate sobs. Eleanor attempted to adjust her posture, lifting her chin with practiced arrogance. "Your children have no respect, Clara," Eleanor stated, her voice dripping with artificial disappointment. "Perhaps you should teach them better manners before bringing them to an event of this caliber."

Without offering a single word in response to Eleanor’s manufactured grievance, Clara moved with lightning speed. Her hand shot out and snatched the beige gold-clasp clutch straight from Eleanor’s trembling fingers. Eleanor gasped, a rare crack appearing in her impenetrable armor as she tried to claw the bag back. "How dare you!" Eleanor hissed, but Clara easily stepped out of her reach. With a swift, practiced motion of her thumb, Clara popped the clasp of the expensive bag open. The gold hardware clicked audibly in the dead silence of the ballroom. Clara stared down into the interior of the leather pouch, her expression hardening into absolute vindication. "Let's see," Clara whispered, her voice carrying across the silent hall with terrifying clarity.

Clara turned the clutch upside down and shook it violently toward the polished marble floor. A cascade of glittering diamonds, heavy gold necklaces, and valuable vintage pearls poured from the bag, scattering loudly across the floor and rolling toward the polished shoes of the stunned onlookers. Gasps echoed through the ballroom as the missing heirlooms of the host family were revealed, having been secretly stashed inside Eleanor’s personal bag all along. Eleanor’s face drained of color, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly as she realized the trap she had laid for the children had sprung shut on her instead. The evidence lay glittering at their feet, undeniable and damning.
