Chapter 9: The Small Apartment

The apartment on Walnut Street was a far cry from the sprawling Victorian manor they had left behind. It consisted of two small bedrooms, a cramped kitchenette with peeling linoleum counters, and a narrow living area dominated by a worn corduroy sofa. Yet, as Julian set the battered canvas suitcase down near the entryway, the air in the room felt breathable, clean, and entirely free of the suffocating menace that had defined their lives over the past week.

Lily dropped her small backpack onto the floor and immediately hobbled over to the window, peering out at the bustling city street below. "Daddy, can we get pancakes for lunch?" she asked, a tentative smile finally touching the corners of her lips—the first genuine smile Julian had seen since before the wedding.

Julian knelt beside her, adjusting the Velcro strap of the white medical leg brace to ensure the pressure was evenly distributed across her calf. "Pancakes, maple syrup, and extra whipped cream," he promised, gently tapping the tip of her nose. "We can celebrate our new independence."

Just as they were settling into their makeshift routine, a sharp knock echoed through the tiny hallway. Julian froze. His mind raced through the possibilities: process servers, debt collectors, or perhaps Elena herself, tracking them down with the relentless efficiency of a corporate raider. He stood up slowly, stepping in front of Lily to shield her from the door, and walked cautiously down the narrow corridor.

He turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open an inch, keeping the chain lock securely fastened.

Standing in the hallway was not Elena, but a middle-aged woman wearing a sensible woolen cardigan and carrying a clipboard. Her kind, weathered face crinkled into an apologetic smile as she recognized the tension in Julian’s posture.

"Mr. Vance? I'm Sarah Jenkins from the Philadelphia Department of Human Services," the woman said softly, holding up an official badge for him to inspect. "I received a formal notification regarding a domestic dispute and potential child endangerment at your residence on Maple Avenue. May I come in?"

Julian’s heart skipped a beat, but the panic quickly subsided into a steady, resolute calm. He unlatched the chain and swung the door wide open. "Please, come in, Ms. Jenkins. We’ve been expecting someone."

Sarah stepped into the tiny living room, her eyes taking in the sparse furniture, the open suitcase, and Lily sitting quietly on the corduroy sofa with her white medical brace clearly visible. She didn't look around with the clinical coldness of Elena’s corporate associates; her gaze was warm, observant, and deeply humane.

"I see you've relocated," Sarah noted gently, taking a seat on the opposite end of the sofa while keeping her voice low and soothing. She looked directly at Lily. "Hello, sweetheart. My name is Sarah. I just want to ask you a few questions about how you're feeling today."
