Chapter 4: The Closed Door

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly against the tall arched windows of the drawing room, illuminating floating motes of dust in the stifling air. Julian stood near the marble fireplace, his hands shoved deep into his pockets to keep them from trembling with frustration. Across the room, three corporate executives in bespoke Italian suits murmured polite pleasantries to Elena, who commanded the space with the effortless authority of an apex predator.

In the corner, sitting on a velvet settee that swallowed her small frame, sat Lily. True to Elena’s uncompromising demand, she wore a heavy, floor-length vintage tartan dress that completely obscured the white medical leg brace locked to her limb. The fabric was thick and scratchy, causing her to shift uncomfortably every few minutes as the artificial heat from the radiators baked the room. Her skin was flushed, and tiny beads of sweat dotted her upper lip.

"And this acquisition," Elena was saying, gesturing toward a digital chart floating on a sleek easel, "will consolidate our supply chain across the mid-Atlantic region. Efficiency is the only metric that guarantees survival in this market."

One of the associates, a graying man named Mr. Harrison, nodded approvingly. "Impressive margins, Elena. But running a conglomerate while stepping into a new marriage? That requires extraordinary discipline. How is the domestic transition treating you?"

Elena smiled—a practiced, social curve of the lips that didn't reach her cold, calculating eyes. "Family life is simply another portfolio to manage, Arthur. Discipline is required in the boardroom just as it is in the nursery. Weakness must be systematically identified and corrected before it infects the entire structure."

Julian’s blood ran cold. He took a sharp step forward, intending to interrupt the conversation and remove Lily from the suffocating room, but a sharp look from Elena froze him in his tracks. Her eyes flashed with a warning so intense it felt like a physical blow. She didn't want a husband; she wanted an obedient prop for her social theater.

Lily let out a faint, ragged gasp. Her hand went instinctively to her right knee, pressing against the heavy tartan fabric where the metal hinge of the brace was biting into her swollen joint. The restricted airflow and the stress of the environment were triggering a minor flare-up, causing a dull, throbbing ache to radiate up her femur.

Julian couldn't take it anymore. He crossed the Persian rug in three long strides, kneeling directly in front of the settee despite the startled murmurs of the executives. "Lily, are you alright?" he asked, his voice thick with a mixture of panic and protective fury.

"It hurts, Daddy," Lily whimpered, her resistance finally crumbling under the weight of the heat and the pain. "The dress is too hot, and my knee feels like it's burning."

Before Julian could lift her into his arms, Elena was there. Her hand gripped Julian’s shoulder with surprising strength, her nails digging through the fabric of his white shirt.

"Do not make a scene in front of my guests, Julian," she whispered furiously into his ear, her voice dripping with venom. "Take her upstairs immediately. And do not bring her back down until she has learned how to sit quietly without demanding an audience."
