Chapter 3: The Cold Breakfast Table

Sunlight pierced the leaded glass windows of the formal dining room, casting long, geometric shadows across the mahogany table. Julian had risen at dawn to prepare breakfast, wanting to shield Lily from whatever residual hostility Elena might carry over from the previous night. He set down a plate of scrambled eggs and warm toast in front of his daughter, who sat quietly in her designated chair, her white medical brace resting comfortably against the padded footrest he had rigged under the table.

The swinging door from the kitchen creaked open, and Elena entered wearing a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit that contrasted sharply with the extravagant gold gown of the day before. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, severe ponytail that emphasized the sharp angles of her cheekbones. She poured herself a cup of black coffee from the silver percolator without greeting either of them, taking a slow, deliberate sip before acknowledging her stepdaughter’s presence.

"Why is she still wearing that contraption at the breakfast table?" Elena asked coldly, her eyes fixed on the white aluminum bars visible beneath the hem of Lily’s cotton shorts. "Morning hours are for rehabilitation and light stretching, not lounging around like an invalid."

Julian set his coffee cup down with a sharp click that rattled the fine porcelain saucer. "Dr. Vance specifically instructed that the brace be worn during all waking hours unless she is performing prescribed hydrotherapy. She is not lounging; she is eating breakfast, Elena."

Lily instinctively shrank back into her chair, her small hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly that her knuckles turned white. She looked down at her plate, pushing a piece of scrambled egg around with her fork without taking a bite. The appetite she had displayed moments earlier had completely vanished, replaced by the heavy, suffocating atmosphere that now saturated every corner of the house.

"Dr. Vance is overly cautious," Elena dismissed with a wave of her manicured hand, pulling out the chair opposite them. "Children need to test their limits. If she never feels the ache of unassisted movement, her brain will never signal the muscles to compensate. You are treating her like porcelain, Julian. Porcelain breaks easily."

"She has juvenile arthritis, not a bad habit," Julian said through gritted teeth, struggling to maintain his composure in front of the child. "Her joints swell and lock if they aren't supported. This isn't a psychological hurdle she can just push through with willpower. It's an autoimmune condition."

Elena sighed, a sound laden with profound disappointment, as if dealing with a pair of unruly, simple-minded subordinates. She leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table. "When I was ten, I fell from a horse and fractured my collarbone. My father didn't rush me to a specialist; he told me to get back in the saddle the next afternoon. That pain taught me resilience. It made me immune to setbacks."

"That sounds abusive, not character-building," Julian retorted sharply.

"That sounds like the reason you live in a inherited house on a teacher's salary while I sit on the board of three Fortune 500 corporations," Elena countered smoothly, her voice dropping an octave into a register of pure ice. "Results matter, Julian. Not excuses."

Lily let out a tiny, involuntary sniffle, a tear spilling over her lower lash line and dropping silently onto her plate. Julian immediately reached across the table, covering her small hand with his own large, warm palm.

"Eat your toast, Lily," Julian instructed gently, keeping his eyes locked onto his wife’s unblinking gaze. "Ignore her. We are going to the park after school, just like we planned."

Elena picked up her tablet from the side table, her thumb swiping across the glass screen with brisk efficiency. "There will be no park today. I have invited my business associates over for a portfolio review this afternoon. The house needs to be pristine, and I expect both of you to be presentable. No braces visible in the drawing room, Julian. Find a long dress for her."
