Chapter 11: The Subpoena

Three days after their relocation to the Walnut Street apartment, the legal reality of their situation caught up with them in the form of a heavy cream-colored envelope slid beneath their front door. Julian picked it up with a sinking feeling in his stomach, turning it over to reveal the embossed letterhead of Sterling & Vance Law Firm, one of the most ruthless corporate defense practices in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Inside was a formal petition for emergency custody filed by Elena, accompanied by a restraining order request and a scathing affidavit drafted by her high-priced legal team. The document painted Julian as an unstable, financially incompetent dependent who had abducted the child during a psychotic episode triggered by wedding-day stress. It claimed that Lily’s medical condition was being exaggerated to manipulate household resources, and demanded immediate repatriation of the minor to the primary residence on Maple Avenue.

Julian sank onto the corduroy sofa, staring at the dense legal jargon with a mixture of dread and cold fury. Elena wasn't just letting them go; she was launching a preemptive strike designed to dismantle his credibility before he could even present his own evidence to the family court.

"What does it say, Daddy?" Lily asked quietly, sitting on the floor beside him while carefully polishing the aluminum bars of her white medical leg brace with a soft cloth. "Is the lady in the gold dress coming back?"

Julian folded the papers and set them deliberately on the coffee table out of her reach. He forced a calm, reassuring smile to his face, reaching down to stroke her pigtails. "No, sweetheart, she's not coming back here. These are just papers from her lawyers. It's a bunch of paperwork, and we have our own legal counsel handling it now. You don't need to worry about a single thing."

The buzzer at the front entrance of the apartment building chimed sharply. Julian stiffened, his instincts immediately flaring into defensive readiness. He walked down the narrow hallway, peering through the small peephole into the dim public corridor.

Standing outside was not a process server or an aggressive attorney, but Marcus Thorne, Julian’s oldest friend from college who now practiced family law down in Center City. Julian quickly unlocked the door and pulled it open, greeting the tall, bearded lawyer with a tight embrace.

"I got your message, Julian," Marcus said as he stepped inside, setting a thick leather briefcase on the linoleum floor. He looked around the cramped living room, taking in the sparse decor before locking eyes with Julian. "Sarah Jenkins filled me in on the DHS report. You're in for a brutal fight, man. Elena Holloway does not lose control of her assets—and she views your daughter as an asset."

"She filed an emergency custody petition twenty minutes ago," Julian said, gesturing toward the cream-colored envelope on the coffee table. "She's claiming I abducted Lily and that the medical condition is fabricated."

Marcus picked up the document, flipping through the pages with practiced speed. A grim smile touched his lips. "Standard corporate playbook: overwhelm the opposition with baseless accusations and financial intimidation before the truth can surface. Fortunately, we have Dr. Vance’s clinical notes, the DHS report, and photographic evidence of the bruising caused by her reckless removal of the brace. We don't need money to win this, Julian. We just need the truth."
