Chapter 10: The Investigator's Notebook

The conversation in the cramped living room lasted for nearly an hour. Sarah Jenkins listened with remarkable patience as Julian recounted the events leading up to their departure: the disastrous wedding reception, the forced removal of the medical brace, the deliberate psychological pressure applied by Elena to suppress the child's chronic condition, and the physical trauma documented by Dr. Vance only hours earlier.
Lily chimed in when prompted, describing in her own innocent, straightforward way how the gold-gowned woman had treated her body like a broken machine that needed to be forced into submission. She showed Sarah the bruised skin around her knee, explaining how the improper removal had caused the metal strut to bite into her flesh.
Sarah wrote notes in her leather-bound ledger, her expression shifting from professional detachment to quiet indignation as the full picture of Elena’s psychological tyranny emerged. When Julian finished, the investigator closed the notebook and looked up with a steady, reassuring gaze.
"What you've described constitutes severe emotional abuse and reckless endangerment of a minor with a documented medical condition," Sarah said, her voice firm and authoritative. "Given the medical records from Dr. Vance and your daughter's testimony, we have strong grounds to file for an emergency protective order and initiate separation proceedings. You did the right thing by getting her out of that house, Mr. Vance."
Julian let out a breath he felt he had been holding since the day of the wedding. The weight of isolation lifted from his shoulders, replaced by the institutional support he so desperately needed. "What happens next?"
"The agency will formally interview Mrs. Vance-Holloway tomorrow," Sarah explained, standing up and slipping her notebook into her leather bag. "Given her high-profile position in the corporate sector, her legal team will likely try to frame this as a custody dispute between a wealthy provider and an unstable spouse. But family courts prioritize child welfare above all else—especially when physical medical neglect is documented by an orthopedist."
She walked over to Lily, crouching down to be at eye level with the young girl. "You're a very brave girl, Lily. Your dad is taking wonderful care of you. If anyone ever tries to take your brace off again, you tell your teacher, your doctor, or me immediately, okay?"

Lily nodded solemnly, offering a small, brave smile. "I will, Ms. Jenkins. Thank you."
As the social worker let herself out of the apartment, Julian pulled Lily into a protective embrace, burying his face in her soft pigtails. The battle was far from over, and Elena’s vast financial resources would undoubtedly unleash a legal storm upon them in the coming days, but the first critical line of defense had been successfully drawn.
