Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

The heavy, rhythmic footsteps inside the kitchen grew louder, coming closer to the sliding glass door with every passing second. Clara froze mid-stride, her triumphant smile vanishing as she realized the intruder was no longer upstairs—they were heading directly out to the patio.

“David,” Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a breathless panic as she grabbed his arm with manic urgency. “They’re coming out here. We have to give them the safe combination right now, or we’re all going to die!”

David shook her off violently, his eyes darting toward the dark kitchen entrance. He still held the sleeping baby securely against his chest with his left arm, leaving his right hand free, though weaponless. The betrayal of Elena’s forged background hung heavily in the air, yet her raw, tearful plea moments ago still echoed in his mind. If Elena was running from corrupt corporate criminals, and Clara was terrified of the vault being opened, the two pieces didn't fit together—unless Clara and the intruder were working from the exact same playbook.

“You’ve been remarkably calm about the safe combinations all night, Clara,” David said, his voice dropping into a lethal, analytical register. He stepped back, putting physical distance between himself and his ex-fiancée. “You knew exactly where the bearer bonds were kept. You knew the intruder was coming for the master study. And you knew about Elena’s past before any of this started, didn't you?”

Clara’s eyes flashed with sudden, blinding anger. Her mouth parted to scream a denial, but before she could speak, the sliding glass door slid open with a sharp screech.

A tall figure stepped out onto the patio. He wore a dark tactical jacket with the hood pulled low, shadowing his face completely. In his gloved right hand, he held a heavy metal crowbar that caught the dim green light of the swimming pool. Behind him, the interior of the kitchen remained pitch black, swallowed by shadows.

“End of discussion,” the intruder said, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely chilling. He raised his left hand, pointing a heavy, black silenced pistol directly at David’s chest—and more horrifyingly, directly at the white blanket wrapped around the infant.

Elena let out a sharp, involuntary gasp from her kneeling position by the pool equipment shed. Without a second thought for her own safety, she surged upward from the wet ground, lunging toward the intruder with reckless, desperate speed.

“No!” Elena screamed, throwing herself directly into the path of the pistol barrel just as the man’s finger began to squeeze the trigger.

A dull, suppressed thud echoed across the patio, followed immediately by the sound of glass shattering as a heavy projectile smashed through the kitchen window from the inside, plunging the entire backyard into absolute, terrifying chaos.
