Chapter 13 - The Monitor on the Table

The sudden flicker of the outdoor patio monitor caught everyone’s attention. The screen, which had been blank and unresponsive since the power outage earlier in the night, abruptly sprang to life with a sharp, high-definition video feed. On the display, a clear, wide-angle shot of David’s master bedroom appeared—showing a second masked figure standing calmly beside the open wall safe, casually tossing a thick stack of bearer bonds into a leather duffel bag.

Detective Vance stopped handcuffing Marcus, his head snapping up toward the glowing screen.

“There’s a second operative inside the house?” Detective Vance demanded, his voice sharp with professional urgency. He drew his service weapon, keeping his eyes locked on the monitor. “David, who else has access to the master bedroom?”

David stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. The second figure on the monitor was tall, wearing a dark hoodie, moving with an eerie, methodical familiarity that suggested they had lived in the house for years.

“No one,” David whispered, the horrible truth washing over him. “Only me, and... and Clara.”

Clara, who was currently being pushed to her feet by the second municipal officer near the garden hedge, let out a hysterical, high-pitched laugh that echoed sharply across the pool deck.

“You’re too late!” Clara shrieked, struggling uselessly against the officer’s firm grip. “Lucas is already in the safe! By the time your little police backup arrives, he’ll be halfway across the county line with every single cent of my family’s trust fund!”

“Lucas?” Detective Vance repeated, narrowing his eyes. “Lucas Vance? Marcus’s younger brother?”

Marcus, still kneeling on the ground and wiping burning pepper spray from his eyes, let out a raspy, victorious chuckle.

“My brother always finishes what he starts,” Marcus wheezed, coughing against the chemical residue. “You can lock us up all you want, Detective, but Lucas has the keys to the kingdom. David is ruined, his company is implicated, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.”

David felt a cold wave of numbness wash over him. He looked down at his infant daughter, who had finally fallen fast asleep against his chest, completely peaceful amidst the madness. The financial ruin didn't frighten him as much as the terrifying realization that his home had been systematically invaded by people he had trusted, loved, and welcomed under his roof.

Elena stepped forward, her face bruised and pale, but her eyes burning with an intense, unwavering resolve. She walked directly over to the patio table where the glowing monitor sat displaying the live feed of the master bedroom.

“He doesn't have the keys, Detective,” Elena said calmly, her voice cutting through Clara’s hysterical laughter.

Detective Vance turned his gaze toward the maid, raising an eyebrow. “What do you mean, Elena? The monitor clearly shows him standing right in front of the open safe.”
