Chapter 12 - The Second Red Light

The heavy wooden door of the guest house swung outward with sudden, violent force, striking David in the back and tumbling him forward onto the damp concrete. Instinct took over; even as he fell, David twisted his body mid-air, curling himself into a protective shell around the infant to ensure the baby never took the brunt of the impact. The infant let out a soft, startled cry, but remained completely unharmed, wrapped tightly in her white blanket.

“Get down!” a sharp, unfamiliar voice commanded from the dark interior of the guest house doorway.

Marcus cursed loudly, stumbling backward as a bright beam of tactical light flooded the patio from the doorway, blinding him once again. From the roof of the guest house above, a second security camera—identical to the one by the pool—clicked to life, its red blinking light staring down at the confrontation with cold, unblinking surveillance.

Clara shrieked, covering her eyes against the glare of the new tactical light as she tripped backward over a patio planter.

“Who’s in there?!” Marcus roared, raising his pistol blindly toward the guest house doorway while sweeping his arm to shield his face.

A tall figure stepped out of the darkness of the guest house, wearing a plain dark windbreaker, holding a heavy-duty pepper-spray projector in one hand and a smartphone displaying a live local police dispatch tracker in the other. It was Detective Vance—not related to Marcus, but a senior investigator with the municipal cybercrimes unit who had been quietly tracking the five-year-old corporate embezzlement case for months.

“Drop the weapon, Marcus! Federal and local warrants are active!” the detective shouted, stepping forward with absolute authority.

Marcus snarled, his eyes darting frantically between the detective, David on the ground, and the escape route leading toward the back fence. Realizing he was completely cornered, his finger tightened convulsively on the trigger of his pistol, aiming it not at the detective, but downward toward David and the infant.

“If I’m going down, I’m taking the whole bloodline with me!” Marcus screamed, his face contorting into a mask of pure, desperate rage.

Elena, still lying on the wet concrete near the pool edge, acted with terrifying speed. Ignoring the agonizing pain in her bruised shoulder, she lunged sideways across the tiles, sweeping her legs out in a desperate tackle that caught Marcus squarely behind the knees just as he pulled the trigger.

The bullet deflected wildly upward, shattering the glass housing of the second security camera on the guest house roof in a shower of sparks and plastic shards.

Before Marcus could recover his balance, Detective Vance closed the distance with staggering speed, discharging the pepper-spray projector directly into Marcus’s face at point-blank range. Marcus shrieked, dropping his pistol as he clutched his burning eyes and crashed hard onto the concrete.

Clara scrambled backward on her hands and knees toward the dark garden hedge, desperately trying to slip away into the shadows while all eyes were locked on the struggling men.

“Don’t move, Clara,” a calm, icy voice echoed from the darkness of the side yard.

Clara froze instantly. Stepping out from the heavy foliage into the dim green pool light was a second municipal officer, holding a pair of steel handcuffs ready and waiting.

David slowly pushed himself up from the ground, his heart hammering against his ribs as he cradled his daughter safely against his chest. He looked down at Elena, who was breathing heavily on the wet tiles, her blue and white maid uniform ruined, her face bruised and tear-stained.

“Are you alright?” David asked softly, extending a trembling hand down to help her up.

Elena looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with unshed tears, and took his hand. But before she could answer, the security monitor sitting on the nearby outdoor patio table—supposedly dead and disconnected—suddenly flickered back on, displaying a live, high-definition video feed of someone standing directly inside David’s master bedroom upstairs.
