Chapter 4 - The Blackout and the Hidden Safe

The sudden, complete darkness was terrifying. Without the glowing red light of the security camera or the overhead kitchen illumination, the backyard plunged into deep shadows, illuminated only by the faint, greenish glow of the underwater pool lights. David held the baby tightly, shielding the infant’s face against his chest as his eyes struggled to adjust.

“The power didn’t trip,” David muttered under his breath, his heart hammering against his ribs. “The breaker box is inside the garage, but the main system control is locked in the study.”

“They cut the feed,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she pressed her back against the exterior wall near David. She reached out blindly in the dark, her fingers brushing against the fabric of his sleeve to anchor herself. “Mr. David, the camera went dark right when the house lights went out. That wasn’t a coincidence. Someone is systematically disabling our eyes and ears.”

On the ground a few feet away, Clara scrambled backward on her hands and knees, her expensive green dress snagging on the wet concrete.

“Get us out of here!” Clara hissed, her voice laced with panic as she stared frantically at the dark glass door. “Whoever is in there has the security override codes! They’re going to come out through the patio, and we are sitting ducks out here in the open!”

“Quiet, Clara!” David snapped, his patience finally snapping under the immense pressure. “Your screaming is going to draw whoever is inside right to us. We need to move toward the side gate quietly.”

Slowly, carefully, David began to edge along the side of the house, keeping his footsteps light on the damp stone path. Elena followed close behind him, her eyes darting through the darkness, scanning the heavy foliage of the garden for any movement. But as they reached the corner of the house leading toward the side yard, a loud, metallic click echoed from the darkness directly in front of them, blocking their escape route.

A flashlight beam suddenly sliced through the night, blindingly bright, pinning David, Elena, and Clara in its harsh, white glare. David squinted, raising a hand to shield the baby’s sensitive eyes from the glare.

“Don’t move another inch,” a deep, unfamiliar voice commanded from behind the blinding light.

David froze, his muscles locking up. He couldn’t see the person holding the flashlight, but he could hear the heavy, deliberate crunch of gravel as the figure stepped closer.

“Who are you?” David demanded, his voice strained with fierce protective instinct. “What do you want?”

“You know very well what I want, David,” the voice replied, smooth and dangerously calm. The flashlight dipped slightly, revealing the lower half of a man wearing a dark tactical jacket, holding a heavy metal crowbar in his gloved hand. “The vault upstairs. Open it, and no one gets hurt. But if you try to stall, or if you rely on your little camera tricks again, things are going to get very messy for your family.”

May you like

Elena gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. She recognized the cadence of that voice from somewhere deep in her memory, a terrifying echo from a past she thought she had left behind. Before she could warn David, the stranger’s flashlight flicked off, plunging them back into darkness just as a heavy, metallic thud echoed from upstairs, signaling that the master bedroom door had just been kicked open.
