Chapter 3 - Footsteps in the Dark Hallway

The heavy, rhythmic sound of footsteps echoing from inside the house brought all movement by the pool to a dead halt. Clara froze with her hand still gripping the handle of the sliding glass door, her posture rigid. David clutched the sleeping baby tighter against his chest, his eyes fixed on the dark interior of the kitchen. Elena held her breath, her hands clasped tightly in front of her wet maid uniform as the terrifying realization set in: someone else was inside the house, and they were not hiding.
“Did you hear that?” Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the gentle splashing of the filtered pool water. “Mr. David, someone is walking down the main corridor.”
David swallowed hard, the dry lump in his throat making it difficult to speak. He looked down at his phone, where the live interior feed was still paused on the image of the safe key sitting innocently on the coffee table. But the camera angle on his phone only covered the living room; it showed nothing of the dark hallway leading toward the bedrooms and the master study.
“Clara,” David said in a low, commanding voice that left no room for argument. “Step away from the door. Right now.”
Clara slowly turned around, her face visibly paler than it had been moments before. The fierce, aggressive facade she had maintained by the pool was rapidly crumbling, replaced by a genuine, frantic unease.
“I didn’t... I didn’t invite anyone here,” Clara stammered, her voice losing its polished edge. “David, you don’t think—”
“I don’t know what to think anymore,” David cut her off sharply. He slowly backed away from the pool edge, keeping his body positioned between the two women and the open glass door. His mind raced through the security system’s architecture. The exterior camera was wired directly to an offline, hard-locked local server in his study—a room that now apparently contained an intruder holding the safe key.
Elena took a cautious step forward, her eyes scanning the dark kitchen.
“We can’t stay out here in the open,” Elena murmured, her voice steadying as her survival instincts kicked in. “The pool lights make us completely visible from the back fence. If someone is inside, they have a clear view of us through the kitchen windows.”
Before David could respond, the overhead lights in the kitchen suddenly flickered and clicked off, plunging the interior into absolute darkness. A moment later, the silhouette of a tall figure appeared behind the glass panes of the sliding door. The figure was motionless, standing just inches from where Clara had been standing moments earlier, staring directly out at them through the glass.
Clara gasped, stumbling backward and tripping over the edge of a patio lounger, crashing hard onto the concrete. She didn’t scream, but her eyes were wide with pure, unfiltered terror as she stared up at the dark silhouette behind the glass.

David shifted his weight, his muscles tensing as he prepared to run toward the detached guest house at the back of the property. But as he looked up one final time at the security camera mounted on the wall, the blinking red light suddenly went dead, plunging the entire exterior into total, suffocating darkness.
