Chapter 8 - Total System Lockdown

The sudden loss of lighting plunged the subterranean server room into impenetrable blackness, broken only by the dim, dying glow of the terminal monitor before its UPS battery failed completely. Baby Leo stirred in Julian’s arms, letting out a soft, confused whimper against his black turtleneck.

“Stay where you are, nobody move,” Detective Vance ordered, his hand flashing to his sidearm as the heavy metal door of the basement automatically slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud.

Julian heard the heavy locking bolts slide into place from the outside, followed by a series of sharp digital beeps echoing from the keypad mounted beside the frame. The smart-home’s emergency protocol had just been triggered remotely, sealing the basement off from the rest of the house.

“The exterior override,” Julian said, gritting his teeth as he balanced Leo with one arm and reached out in the dark to feel along the cold concrete wall for the manual release hatch. “Someone just accessed the master override from an external IP address. They’re locking down the entire data grid.”

Elena’s voice cut through the dark from near the doorway, steady and unpanicked.

“Mr. Sterling, check your pocket. The smartphone Maya gave you—is it still receiving a signal?” she asked.

Julian remembered the phone he had slipped into his coat pocket during the chaos upstairs. He reached inside, pulling out the device. The screen was still lit, displaying a weak but functional emergency LTE connection. Even better, Maya had left the screen recording app running in the background, casting a soft, pale blue light across the cramped server room.

“I have a signal,” Julian said, holding the phone up to illuminate the immediate area. “And look at the data transfer indicator in the corner. The local server isn’t dead—it’s actively uploading everything to an external cloud server right now.”

Detective Vance stepped up beside Julian, his flashlight beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate the emergency breaker panel on the wall.

“We need to cut the main power feed manually,” Vance said, grabbing the heavy metal lever of the circuit breaker. “If they’re wiping the local drives and uploading classified files simultaneously, killing the physical grid at the transformer box is our only chance to freeze the transfer.”

Julian nodded, handing baby Leo over to Elena with complete, unquestioning trust. The maid gathered the infant securely against her shoulder, shielding his eyes from the harsh glare of the phone screen.

“Hold him tight,” Julian murmured, before stepping over to help the detective with the heavy breaker lever.

Together, Julian and Detective Vance braced their weight against the rusted iron handle and pulled downward with all their might. With a deafening metallic screech and a shower of orange sparks from the housing unit, the master circuit breaker snapped into the off position.

The low hum of the servers died instantly. The entire house above them went completely dark, silencing the smart-home system once and for all. But as the sparks faded into darkness, the smartphone screen in Julian’s hand buzzed violently, displaying a new notification that made their blood run cold: Upload Complete. Data Packet Transmitted to Unknown Recipient in Zurich.
