Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Tipster

The sharp vibration of Julian’s smartphone cut through the heavy silence of the living room as Detective Vance led a handcuffed Vanessa toward the front door. Vanessa didn’t fight back; her head was bowed, her metallic silver dress catching the harsh porch lights as she was escorted out into the cooling Los Angeles night.

Julian pulled his phone from his pocket with his free hand, keeping baby Leo securely cradled against his chest. The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unlisted, restricted number. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, his thumb hovering over the screen before he pressed accept and brought the device to his ear.

“Mr. Sterling,” a distorted, synthetic voice crackled through the speaker, devoid of any natural inflection. “I hope you’re enjoying the family reunion. But don’t unpack your bags just yet. The police only have half the story.”

Julian froze, his eyes darting toward Detective Vance, who was pausing at the doorway.

“Who is this?” Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper so as not to wake Leo, who had finally drifted off to sleep against his shoulder. “How do you have this number?”

“Who I am doesn’t matter,” the synthetic voice replied smoothly, the sound of keyboard clicking echoing faintly in the background. “What matters is why Mrs. Sterling was so desperate for an insurance payout tomorrow morning. She wasn’t just covering her boutique’s debts, Mr. Sterling. She was paying off a very specific architectural firm—the same firm that designed your glass house with a few modifications you were never supposed to discover.”

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked around the expansive, modern living room, suddenly viewing the towering glass walls, the open-concept layout, and the minimalist design not as a symbol of success, but as a cage built with hidden blueprints.

“Modifications?” Julian echoed, stepping closer to the glass staircase. “What are you talking about?”

“Check the master blueprint file stored on the smart-home’s main server,” the caller instructed calmly. “Look at the structural permit filed three years ago, right before you bought the property from the estate of the previous owner. You’ll find that this house was never meant to be a permanent family home. It was designed as a surveillance asset—and Vanessa was assigned to make sure you never left it.”

Before Julian could demand an explanation, the line went dead with a sharp click.

Detective Vance turned back from the doorway, noticing the pale, shaken expression on Julian’s face.

“Is everything alright, Mr. Sterling?” the detective asked, stepping back into the room.

Julian swallowed hard, his mind racing as he looked down at Elena, who was still sitting near the base of the stairs, quietly bandaging her scraped wrist with a first-aid kit she had retrieved from the kitchen.

“Detective,” Julian said, his voice tight with growing dread. “You need to check the master server in the basement before you take Vanessa anywhere. There’s something built into the foundation of this house that the police reports missed completely.”
