Chapter 1 - The Fracture Beneath the Glass

The shattered fragments of the expensive stroller sparkled like cruel diamonds against the polished hardwood floor of the ultra-modern glass house. Elena lay crumpled near the bottom of the architectural masterpiece of a staircase, her maid uniform torn at the shoulder, her dark hair coming loose from its tight bun. She gasped for air, clutching her bruised ribs while the chilling night wind whistled against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls that overlooked the sprawling, silent hills of Los Angeles.
Julian rushed across the living room, his black turtleneck stretching as he dropped to his knees beside the fallen woman. His face twisted in rage, his voice echoing sharply through the cavernous, minimalist space.
“What did you do?” Julian demanded, grabbing Elena by the arm and pulling her upward with rough urgency.
Before Elena could muster a breath to defend herself, Vanessa stormed down the remaining steps. Her silver metallic dress caught the ambient recessed lighting, her large hoop earrings swinging violently as she pointed an accusing, manicured finger directly at the terrified maid.
“Oh my god, she pushed my baby!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with performative agony as she scanned the empty room for sympathy.
Julian’s eyes darkened, the veins in his neck bulging as he turned his furious gaze back to Elena, his grip tightening painfully on her forearm.
“You incompetent reckless monster,” Julian snarled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. “Where is my son? Where is Leo?”
Elena winced in pain, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she shook her head, unable to speak through the sudden asthma attack gripping her chest. She pointed a trembling hand toward the darkened hallway near the kitchen, but before anyone could move toward the shadows, a small figure darted into the pool of light.
It was Maya, Julian’s ten-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, her long blonde hair disheveled over her pink t-small shirt and blue jeans. Her face was pale, devoid of the usual childish warmth, and her hands shook violently as she thrust a glowing smartphone directly into her father’s face.
“Dad, wait, look at this!” Maya cried out, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor blade.

Julian froze, his hand still clamped around Elena’s arm, while Vanessa hovered anxiously over his shoulder, peering down at the illuminated screen with narrowed eyes. On the display, a shaky digital recording replayed the exact seconds leading up to the disaster, capturing a terrifying detail that nobody in the room was prepared to witness.
