Chapter 3 - The Secret Panel in the Library

The rhythmic tapping sound echoed again through the spacious, modern living room, freezing every adult in their tracks. It was a faint, deliberate double-knock, coming from deep within the custom-built mahogany architectural wall that housed Julian’s rare book collection and the home automation hub.
Julian took a slow step backward, his eyes locked on the seamless wooden paneling. He had lived in this architectural masterpiece for three years, believing he knew every square foot of the smart-home’s floor plan, yet that sound revealed a hidden cavity he had never suspected existed.
“What is that?” Julian asked, though his question wasn’t directed at anyone in particular.
Vanessa’s composure finally fractured completely. She lunged forward, her silver metallic dress catching the dim light as she tried to block Julian’s path to the wall.
“Don’t touch it, Julian!” Vanessa pleaded, her voice rising to a frantic pitch that betrayed her carefully constructed facade. “It’s just settling pipes, or the structural expansion of the glass frame against the concrete foundation. You know how these modern houses shift at night when the temperature drops!”
Julian gently pushed Vanessa aside, his touch impersonal and firm. He reached out and pressed a discreet brass medallion near the base of the bookshelf—a manual override emergency toggle that he had installed when he bought the property from its reclusive architect. With a soft pneumatic hiss, a heavy section of the mahogany bookcase unlatched and swung inward, revealing a pitch-black corridor hidden behind the luxury millwork.
The air that drifted out from the secret space smelled stale, carrying the faint, unmistakable scent of warm milk, lavender baby wipes, and terrified panic.
“Leo?” Julian called out into the darkness, his voice cracking with emotion as he stepped over the threshold.
Maya held the smartphone higher, using its flashlight beam to cut through the gloom. The bright LED light swept across a cramped, windowless panic room equipped with high-end security monitors, a small cot, and a basket of untouched toys. Cuddled in the corner of the cot, clutching a worn blue security blanket, was baby Leo. He looked up, blinking against the sudden harsh light, but he wasn’t crying. He looked calm, fed, and completely isolated from the chaos outside.
Julian rushed forward, scooping his infant son into his arms and pressing the toddler against his chest. He buried his face in Leo’s soft curls, closing his eyes in profound relief before turning back to face the entrance of the hidden room.
Vanessa stood in the doorway of the secret space, trapped by the harsh reality of the glowing phone screen and the physical evidence of her deception.

“You locked him in here,” Julian stated, his voice devoid of anger now, replaced by a chilling, arctic detachment. “While we were downstairs, while Elena was tending to his evening bottle, you locked my son inside a wall.”
