Chapter 2 - The Ten Seconds That Changed Everything

The glow from the smartphone screen cast an eerie, flickering blue light across Julian’s face as he stared at the digital playback. Vanessa hovered closely beside him, her breath hitching in her throat as her silver dress rustled with every anxious movement. The video, captured from the landing of the second-floor gallery, showed Elena stumbling backward—not because she tripped over her own feet, but because a heavy, designer shoe had deliberately kicked out from the shadows to clip her ankle just as she lifted the stroller.

Julian’s mouth parted slightly, the harsh anger draining from his features to be replaced by a sickening, hollow realization. He slowly lifted his head, his gaze shifting away from the glowing screen and tracking back toward the dark alcove beneath the grand staircase.

“Who’s that?” Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the luxury smart-home’s climate control system.

Vanessa stepped back, her hoop earrings clinking softly against her jawline as she crossed her arms over her metallic dress. Her eyes darted nervously toward the kitchen entrance, her previous theatrical rage instantly replaced by a calculated, defensive stillness.

“It’s a glitch, Julian,” Vanessa lied, her voice far too steady for someone who had just watched a potential catastrophe. “The camera angle is distorted. Maya has been editing videos on her tablet again. She’s imaginative, you know how children are when they want attention.”

Maya stepped forward, shielding the smartphone against her chest like a shield. The young girl’s blue eyes blazed with a fierce, protective fury that made her look far older than her ten years.

“I didn’t edit anything, Vanessa,” Maya fired back, her voice ringing clear and steady in the large room. “I was sitting on the reading bench upstairs when I heard the arguing. I saw you walk out of the guest suite, Vanessa. I saw what your foot did.”

Julian slowly stood up, releasing Elena’s arm. The maid slumped back against the base of the stairs, massaging her bruised wrist while watching the family dynamic implode with quiet, calculating observation. Julian turned slowly to face his wife, his chest rising and falling beneath the black turtleneck in slow, heavy waves.

“Vanessa,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Where is my son?”

Vanessa swallowed hard, her tongue darting out to wet her suddenly dry lips. She opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, a muffled, rhythmic tapping sound echoed from inside the paneled mahogany wall behind the wet bar.
