Chapter 8

The yellowed pages of the original company ledger fluttered through the air like crippled birds, blanketing the pristine white floor of the foyer in a confetti of decades-old guilt. Each sheet represented a piece of the Vance family foundation, now torn apart and scattered in the dim, flashing emergency lights.

Jonathan stared down at the paper in his hand, his fingers trembling violently. The ink was faded, but the words were crystal clear—a detailed accounting of funds diverted from David Sterling’s personal accounts on the exact night of his disappearance.

"Father... you signed this," Jonathan whispered, his voice laced with a profound betrayal that cut deeper than any corporate loss. "You didn't just embezzle... you wrote it all down. Like a diary of a crime."

Arthur leaned against the glass balustrade, sliding slowly down until he sat on the bottom step, his breathing ragged and shallow. "I was young... arrogant. I thought if anything ever went wrong, having the exact numbers would protect me from my own associates. I never thought... I never thought it would be used to destroy my entire family."

"It's not destroying the family, Grandpa. It's exposing the cancer," Maya’s voice rang out firmly from the darkness near the elevator. She had used her own smartphone flashlight, turning on the low-setting LED to illuminate her face just enough to show fierce determination. "We can't build a future on lies and stolen money. Let it all burn."

"Shut up, you self-righteous little brat!" Victoria screamed from the top of the glass staircase. Her silhouette loomed large against the barred security shutters. "You think losing the money is the worst part? Look at the back of the pages, Jonathan. Look at the last entry in that ledger!"

Jonathan dropped to one knee, frantically gathering the scattered sheets of paper as they were illuminated by the intermittent red strobes. His fingers flipped through the torn documents until he reached the final page, dated just three weeks prior. It wasn't written in his father's hand. It was written in Victoria’s sharp, aggressive cursive.

"What is this?" Jonathan muttered, reading the frantic lines under the harsh red glow. "An agreement... transferring all Vance Enterprises assets to... to a foreign holding company registered under your maiden name?"

Victoria let out a cold, triumphant laugh from above. "Surprise again, darling. While you were busy playing the grieving husband and the dutiful son, I didn't just blackmail Arthur—I legally executed a hostile takeover of every single subsidiary we own. The signatures are notarized, the digital tokens are secured, and the transfer completes automatically at midnight. That's in less than fifteen minutes."

Detective Miller took a tactical step toward the base of the glass staircase, his service weapon raised. "Mrs. Vance, corporate fraud and extortion are non-bailable offenses. You are digging your grave deeper with every word."

"I'm already at the bottom, Detective!" Victoria yelled back, her voice cracking with unhinged adrenaline. "Might as well enjoy the dirt!"

Before anyone could react, the sharp, distinctive chime of a smart-home terminal echoed from the kitchen hallway, announcing the arrival of an encrypted external transmission.
