Chapter 2

The harsh blue light from Maya’s smartphone illuminated Jonathan’s pale face in the silent entryway. He stood completely motionless, the fury that had defined his posture just seconds earlier draining away, replaced by a cold, sickening realization. On the small screen, the camera angle captured the upper landing of the glass staircase. Victoria’s silver dress flashed in the frame as she deliberately kicked the stroller’s wheels, sending it hurtling toward the edge while Elena was turned away, frantically trying to grab a dropped toy.

"Where... where did you get this?" Jonathan whispered, his voice losing all its prior thunder, dropping to a dangerous, low rumble.

Maya clutched the phone tighter to her chest, her young eyes flashing with a maturity that felt entirely too heavy for her years.

"I was recording a TikTok on the landing, Dad. I saw everything. I saw her do it." Maya pointed a steady finger toward Victoria, who was now backing away slowly toward the minimalist kitchen archway.

Victoria’s frantic demeanor vanished instantly, replaced by a razor-sharp, desperate calculation. Her silver dress rustled as she forced a tight, unconvincing laugh, though her eyes darted frantically toward the exit doors.

"Jonathan, don't be ridiculous. That girl is lying. It’s edited—AI-generated nonsense meant to frame me. You know how these teenagers are obsessed with clout and viral videos." Victoria’s voice climbed an octave, betraying the panic she was desperately trying to conceal beneath layers of manufactured outrage.

Elena slowly stood up, still cradling the infant securely in her left arm. Her knees throbbed from the fall, but adrenaline kept the pain at bay. She looked directly at Jonathan, her dark eyes steady and unblinking.

"Mr. Vance, I have worked in this house for three years. I have never lied to you, and I would never jeopardize the safety of this child. Check the cloud storage. Check the raw file properties. Maya’s phone doesn't lie."

Jonathan slowly turned his head to look at his wife. The silence in the cavernous, luxury house grew oppressive, broken only by the faint hum of the smart-home climate control system. He took one slow step toward Victoria, his dark eyes narrowing as decades of blind trust began to crumble into dust.

"Unlock the phone, Maya," Jonathan said without breaking eye contact with his wife.

Maya stepped forward, tapping the screen to replay the high-resolution footage from the beginning. As the damning pixels played out for the third time, Victoria’s facade finally shattered completely, revealing the cold, calculating stranger beneath the glamorous surface.
