Chapter 4

The red and blue emergency lights washed over the polished white floors of the foyer, casting long, erratic shadows across the minimalist furniture. The heavy oak front door swung open without waiting for an invitation, revealing two uniformed police officers and a middle-aged detective whose sharp gaze took in the entire tableau in a single sweep.
"Jonathan Vance?" the lead detective asked, flashing a gold badge. "We received an automated high-priority alert regarding a domestic endangerment call originating from this IP address."
Jonathan released Victoria’s wrist, stepping back as if he had been burned. He nodded slowly, holding up his own phone which was still connected to the security console.
"Detective. You're just in time. My wife just attempted to murder my child."
Victoria immediately fell to her knees on the marble floor, letting out a theatrical, exaggerated sob that rang completely false in the tense atmosphere.
"Officer, he's lying! He's trying to frame me during a messy divorce proceeding! Look at him, he's unhinged!" Victoria pointed a trembling finger at Jonathan, attempting to salvage her narrative.
Detective Miller ignored Victoria entirely, turning his attention to Maya, who was still clutching her smartphone.
"Young lady, was that device recording when the incident occurred?"
Maya stepped forward bravely, her voice clear and steady despite her youth. "Yes, Officer. I have the entire sequence of events, including her confession, stored right here in the cloud."
Miller held out an evidence bag. "Hand it over, please. We’ll need to secure the digital chain of custody immediately."
As Maya transferred the device into the sterile plastic evidence bag, Victoria lunged desperately toward the coffee table, snatching up her designer handbag. Her hand darted inside, and before anyone could react, she pulled out a heavy, matte-black firearm—a legally registered weapon Jonathan had insisted she keep for home defense.
"Stay back! All of you!" Victoria screamed, waving the weapon wildly. The glamour of the silver dress was completely ruined by the feral desperation in her eyes.
Elena instinctively ducked, shielding the baby with her entire body as she pressed herself flat against the base of the glass staircase. Jonathan took a cautious step forward, his hands raised palms up.

"Victoria, put the gun down. You’re only making a life sentence into an inescapable reality."
"Shut up, Jonathan! If I'm going down, I'm taking the whole wretched house with me!" Victoria’s finger tightened visibly on the trigger, her breath coming in ragged, hysterical gasps as the officers drew their weapons.
