Chapter 5

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, save for the rhythmic, pulsing glow of the police cruisers outside. The black barrel of the firearm trembled slightly in Victoria’s manicured hand, aimed directly at the center of the room where Jonathan stood frozen. The air felt thick, charged with a terrifying static electricity that made the hairs on Elena’s arms stand on end.
"Mrs. Vance, drop the weapon immediately! Police!" Detective Miller barked, his stance widening as he leveled his service pistol with lethal precision.
Victoria’s eyes darted frantically between the detective’s steady aim and Jonathan’s grim, unyielding expression. A manic, desperate laugh escaped her lips, echoing off the high glass ceilings.
"You think you’ve won, don't you, Jonathan? You think this tidy little family can just discard me like old trash?" Victoria sneered, her finger twitching dangerously close to the sensitive trigger. "You have no idea what secrets I’m taking down with me. This house was built on blood long before we ever moved in."
Jonathan frowned, his tactical focus momentarily broken by her bizarre statement. "What are you talking about? Put the gun down, Victoria. This isn't about the house; this is about your psychotic greed."
"Is it?" Victoria whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling register. "Ask your father about the foundation of Vance Enterprises. Ask him where the initial capital came from the night his business partner mysteriously vanished thirty years ago. I inherited more than just a lifestyle, Jonathan. I inherited the ledger."
Maya gasped, stepping closer to her father. "Dad, don't listen to her! She's just trying to stall, she's bluffing!"
"She's not bluffing," a frail, raspy voice echoed from the dim hallway leading to the master elevator.
Everyone froze. Slowly, the heavy mahogany door of the private elevator slid open, revealing Jonathan’s elderly father, Arthur Vance, leaning heavily on a polished wooden cane. His face was ghostly pale, his eyes wide with a terror that superseded even the police presence in his home. He looked directly at Victoria, then at the gun in her hand, and finally at the secure evidence bag held by Detective Miller.
"Father," Jonathan breathed, stepping back in shock. "What is he talking about? What ledger?"

Arthur ignored his son, his rheumy eyes fixed on Victoria with absolute horror. "She found the wall safe in the study, Jonathan. The one behind the oil painting. She didn't just try to kill your child today... she planned to frame you for an eighty-million-dollar corporate embezzlement scheme that goes all the way to the federal indictments."
Victoria smiled coldly, her thumb pulling back the hammer of the gun with a sharp, metallic click that sent a shiver down everyone's spine.
