Chapter 6

Arthur Vance’s breathing came in shallow, wheezing gasps as he stepped out of the elevator, his knuckles white against the carved handle of his cane. The grand foyer seemed to tilt on its axis as the revelation hung heavy in the air. Victoria kept the black firearm trained steadily on Jonathan, her smile turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice.

"Surprise, family," Victoria purred, her voice dripping with venom. "Arthur thought he buried the past deep enough beneath concrete and offshore accounts. But secrets have a funny way of rotting through the floorboards, especially in a house built with stolen money."

Detective Miller didn't lower his weapon, but his tactical assessment shifted instantly. "Ma'am, drop the firearm right now, or my officers will be forced to use lethal force. This situation has just escalated into federal territory."

"Let them try," Victoria hissed, her eyes locking onto the elderly patriarch. "Arthur, tell them. Tell your golden-boy son how you built his precious corporate empire on the bones of your former partner, David Sterling. Tell him whose signature is really on those shell company documents."

Jonathan looked back and forth between his trembling father and his unhinged wife, his mind struggling to process the sheer scale of the deception.

"Father, is she talking about? Answer me! What does she mean by corporate embezzlement?"

Arthur slumped against the glass balustrade of the staircase, defeated. The strength seemed to drain entirely from his aging frame.

"It’s true, Jonathan," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable shame. "Thirty years ago... David and I built Vance Enterprises together. When he discovered I was siphoning funds to save the company from bankruptcy, we argued near this very staircase. He fell... and I panicked. I covered it up. Victoria discovered the physical ledger in my private wall safe six months ago. She’s been blackmailing me ever since, bleeding the company dry under the threat of exposing the murder."

Elena listened in stunned silence, holding the baby tighter as the dark underbelly of the Vance family dynasty was dragged violently into the light. She had only ever seen the polished wealth on the surface; she had never imagined the rot beneath.

Maya stared at her grandfather, tears streaming freely down her cheeks now. "Grandpa... you lied to us our whole lives? You’re a criminal?"

"I’m a coward," Arthur wept, bowing his head in profound sorrow.

Victoria laughed, a harsh, grating sound that shattered the heavy atmosphere. "And now, with you all distracted by ancient history, nobody noticed that the front security gates automatically locked themselves the moment the police cruisers arrived. And the manual override code?" She tapped her silver dress pocket with her free hand. "Only I have it."

Before Detective Miller could process her warning, the overhead lights in the luxury house flickered violently, died completely, and plunged the entire mansion into pitch-black darkness.
