Chapter 5

Clara collapsed back onto the velvet settee, the dense embroidery of her green gown catching the light as she clutched the transaction log to her chest. Her breath came in shallow, ragged gasps, the absolute certainty she had held for months shattering into a million irreparable pieces.
“He... he told me we were building a future together,” Clara murmured, tears finally welling in her eyes, though she blinked them back with fierce, stubborn pride. “He asked me to manage the charity gala funds, claiming it would build my profile for the social registry. But he never let me see the primary ledgers.”
“Because he knew you’d ask questions if you saw the destination of the wire transfers,” Elena said, sitting down beside her sister. For the first time in years, the wall of rivalry and unspoken tension that had separated them dissolved. They were united by betrayal. “We need to move fast, Clara. Marcus has the digital backups at the warehouse, but Julian’s internal security detail is already trying to ping our network.”
Clara looked up, her eyes clearing of shock, replaced by a cold, familiar resolve that ran deep in the Vance bloodline. “If his security team is sweeping our servers, they’ll find the access logs from Marcus’s terminal within the hour. We can’t stay here.”
“I didn't plan to,” Elena replied, pulling out her smartphone. “We’re packing what we need and heading to the northern estate. No phones, no credit cards, no digital trails.”
“What about Julian?” Clara asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. “If he realizes we’ve gone dark and taken the evidence, he won’t just try to freeze our assets. He’ll use his military authority to declare us flight risks.”
“Let him try,” Elena said, standing up. “The military tribunals require federal oversight. If we get the physical ledgers into the hands of Director Vance at the Federal Bureau—our second cousin who actually despises Julian’s political faction—we can initiate a pre-emptive federal audit before Julian’s promotion goes through.”

Clara stood slowly, smoothing down the front of her olive dress. The transformation was subtle, but absolute. The naive socialite who had defended Julian’s arrogance just an hour ago was gone. In her place stood a woman ready to reclaim her dignity. “Let’s go. I know where Julian keeps the physical backup keys to his private office safe. If we’re going to tear him down, we need the master keys to his entire operation.”
Ten minutes later, the Vance sisters slipped out through the back service entrance of the estate, leaving the opulent chandeliers and velvet drawing rooms behind them. They climbed into the dark gray sports car, the engine rumbling to life beneath the canopy of trees. As they sped away into the dark highway, the digital clock on the dashboard flickered, marking the beginning of a relentless countdown. Julian Thorne was about to discover that underestimating the Vance women was the last mistake he would ever make.
