Chapter 13

The auditorium descended into a stunned, deafening silence. The senators on the committee exchange panicked glances, suddenly realizing the monumental political scandal unfolding before the live press cameras recording the session.

Julian stood rigidly at the center of the dais, his mask of supreme confidence finally cracking at the edges. He looked out over the crowd, his eyes finding Elena sitting quietly in the back row. In that single, lingering look, all the arrogance, the condescension, and the absolute belief in his own untouchability dissolved into cold realization. He had underestimated them. He had viewed them as decorative fixtures in a grand game of ambition, forgetting that those who hold the purse strings can just as easily pull the rug out from under the throne.

“Order! Order in the chamber!” the committee chairman shouted, banging his gavel repeatedly as murmurs surged through the press gallery. He turned his severe gaze toward Julian. “Commander Thorne, how do you respond to these allegations?”

Julian straightened his jacket, his jaw tightening as he maintained a veneer of military discipline, though the color had completely drained from his face. “These documents are forgeries manufactured by parties with a personal vendetta against my administration. I demand an independent forensic audit before any—”

“The audit has already been executed automatically by the central banking protocol,” Director Vance cut him off, sliding a printed confirmation sheet across the podium. “Your offshore accounts were frozen twenty-four hours ago at the command of the Vance estate. The digital trail is absolute.”

At a subtle nod from the chairman, two military police officers in dark green uniforms—ironically, the very men assigned to his own detail—stepped up onto the dais. They didn’t draw their weapons, but their intent was unmistakable. They flanked Julian on either side, their hands resting formally at their sides.

“Commander Thorne, you are hereby relieved of your command pending a full military tribunal and federal criminal indictment,” the chairman declared, his voice echoing finality across the hall.

Julian did not resist. To fight back would be to shatter the last remnants of his dignity. With a slow, deliberate motion, he unpinned the gold insignia from his lapel, placing it down on the wooden podium. He cast one final, piercing look toward the back of the auditorium, meeting Elena’s eyes one last time before turning on his heel and walking off the dais flanked by the guards.

As the heavy doors of the auditorium closed behind him, the tension in the room slowly began to dissipate, replaced by the frantic chatter of journalists scrambling for their phones to break the story of the century.

Elena leaned back in her seat, letting out a long, steady breath. The Vance name was safe, the corruption had been dragged into the harsh light of accountability, and the debt had been paid in full.
