Chapter 12

The grand auditorium of the Department of Defense headquarters was packed to capacity. High-ranking military officials in immaculate dress uniforms, civilian defense contractors, and members of the Senate Armed Services Committee sat in tiered rows beneath a soaring domed ceiling. At the center of the dais stood Commander Julian Thorne, his dark green military-style uniform pressed to absolute perfection, his medals gleaming under the sharp spotlights.
He projected an aura of unshakeable authority, standing tall and poised as the committee chairman read aloud the formal commendations leading up to the final confirmation vote.
In the back row of the gallery, half-hidden in the shadows beneath the balcony, sat Elena and Clara. They had cleaned up as best they could in the federal washrooms, wearing borrowed coats over their travel-stained clothes, their expressions calm and unyielding.
Julian glanced casually toward the back of the auditorium, his eyes sweeping over the crowd. For a fraction of a second, his gaze locked onto the two figures in the shadows. He did not flinch, but a micro-expression of cold surprise rippled across his features. He had expected them to be detained, silenced, or safely locked away by his private security detail. Instead, they were sitting here, watching him with unwavering focus.
The committee chairman lowered his papers, looking out over the assembly. “Before we call the final vote on the confirmation of Commander Thorne, the chair recognizes Director Marcus Vance Sr. of the Department of Internal Oversight for an urgent procedural motion.”
A murmur rippled through the auditorium. Heads turned toward the center aisle as Director Vance strode forward, carrying a thick leather briefcase. His face was set in stone, devoid of any diplomatic warmth.
Julian’s posture stiffened perceptibly. He shifted his weight, his eyes narrowing as his uncle by marriage approached the dais.
Director Vance stepped up to the podium, placing the briefcase down with a heavy thud that echoed through the room’s acoustic sound system. He looked directly at the committee chairman, then turned his gaze toward Julian.
“Mr. Chairman, members of the committee,” Director Vance began, his deep, resonant voice cutting cleanly through the sudden silence of the hall. “I move that the confirmation proceedings for Commander Julian Thorne be suspended immediately under Section Four of the National Security Act, pending a federal investigation into financial corruption, abuse of military authority, and unauthorized arms diversion.”
Total chaos erupted in the auditorium. Shouts of protest and gasps of shock bounced off the marble walls as senators stood up from their seats, demanding clarification.

Julian stepped forward, raising his hand with practiced calm, his voice steady as he addressed the chairman. “This is an absurd, politically motivated stunt orchestrated by disgruntled family members who—”
“It is no stunt, Commander,” Director Vance interrupted sharply, flipping open the briefcase and holding up the titanium USB drives and original financial ledgers. “These files contain direct proof of your offshore shell companies routing millions in embezzled defense funds to Apex Global. The digital logs, the encrypted comms, and the physical transaction receipts are already uploaded to the primary federal server.”
