Chapter 3

The interior of the Pier 42 warehouse smelled of damp concrete and old iron. A single overhead bulb cast a harsh circle of light over a scarred wooden workbench, where Marcus Vance had already set up his dual-screen laptop. The glow reflected in his anxious eyes as Elena walked in, her coat swishing around her ankles.
“You actually did it,” Marcus muttered, watching her approach. “The automated alerts just hit the central bank. Thorne’s chief of staff is already calling my cell. I ignored it, obviously, but the panic is real.”
Elena shrugged off her coat, tossing it over a folding chair, and stepped into the light. The scratch on her cheek was stark against her pale skin. “Let them panic. For too long, our family has funded Julian’s ambitions under the table, assuming his military career would eventually benefit our industrial logistics. But tonight, he made it clear: we are his subjects, not his partners.”
Marcus pointed to the screen, where lines of green code were cascading down the monitor. “Look at this transfer log. Three days ago, before he even proposed the merger, Julian authorized a massive capital siphon from our primary defense manufacturing account into an unregistered shell company in the Caymans. He’s been planning to cut us out once the government contract was signed.”
Elena leaned over the workbench, her eyes narrowing as she studied the transaction IDs. The numbers confirmed her worst suspicions. Julian wasn’t just arrogant; he was corrupt, using her family’s wealth to build a private slush fund for an unauthorized militia or political coup. “He thought he could use Vance money to buy his way into the Joint Chiefs, and then leave us holding the bag for any financial discrepancies.”
“Worse,” Marcus whispered, tapping a key to open a hidden folder. “Look who owns the shell company. It’s registered under a subsidiary of Apex Global—the private security contractor currently under federal investigation for smuggling arms into restricted zones.”
A cold draft swept through the warehouse, rustling the loose blueprints on the table. Elena felt the gravity of the situation settle over her shoulders. This wasn't merely a personal insult at a hotel gala anymore. It was high treason, and Julian had deliberately linked her family’s name to the paper trail. If the federal authorities uncovered the Cayman accounts, the Vance empire would fall right alongside him.
“We need to secure hard copies of every transaction before he realizes the accounts are frozen,” Elena said, her voice steady. “If we hand these logs directly to the Department of Justice, we might secure immunity, but Julian has powerful friends in the Senate. They’ll bury the file within twenty-four hours.”
Marcus looked up, frowning. “Then what’s your play? If we go public, we trigger an economic panic. If we go to the feds, they cover it up. We need leverage that Julian cannot spin, redact, or destroy.”

“We need Clara,” Elena said softly.
Marcus stared at her, incredulous. “Clara? Your sister is practically engaged to the man! She wore his colors tonight, she defends his actions at every family dinner, and she thinks the sun rises and sets on his decorated shoulders. She’ll run straight to him and tell him everything you’re planning.”
