CHAPTER 7: BROTHERHOOD AND BETRAYAL

Dante turned around, tears streaming down his weathered, scarred face. The radio hissed between them like a venomous snake.

"They have Leo, Marco," Dante sobbed, his voice cracking. "Sal has my brother in a meatpacking freezer in Queens. They told me if I guided their strike team to the ridge, they’d let Leo walk!"

Marco did not reach for his weapon. He slowly raised both empty hands, stepping forward.

"Look at me, Dante," Marco commanded gently. "We bled together in Palermo. We buried David together. Is this who you are?"

"I don't have a choice!" Dante shouted, his thumb hovering over the detonator switch. "They're coming! They're already at the base of the ridge!"

From the bedroom doorway, a small voice broke through the suffocating tension.

"Uncle Dante?"

Lily stood there, rubbing her eyes, clutching the drawing of the oak tree against her chest. She looked at Dante not with fear, but with the same pure innocence that Marco fought every day to protect.

Dante looked down at the little girl. The cold, mechanical reality of what he was doing hit him like a physical blow. The detonator slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering uselessly against the floorboards. Dante sank to his knees, burying his face in his hands.

"I'm sorry," Dante choked out. "God forgive me, Marco. I'm so sorry."
