CHAPTER 1: THE SIGNAL

The red diode inside the doll’s left pupil pulsed with a rhythmic, sickening cadence. Marco Moretti did not flinch, but the muscles along his inked jaw turned to iron. For twenty years, Marco had lived in a world where shadows had teeth, yet he had built this gated upstate estate specifically to keep that world away from six-year-old Lily.
Lily’s small hand gripped the fabric of his dark suit jacket. "Is she angry at me, Mr. Moretti?" she whispered, her innocent hazel eyes darting between the doll and the doorway.
"No, *piccola*," Marco said, his voice dropping into a low, calm rumble that masked the rising storm inside him. "She’s just broken."
At the nursery threshold, Elena—Lily’s aunt and legal guardian alongside Marco—clutched the doorframe, her knuckles stark white. Standing beside her was Officer Miller, his hand resting casually near his holster.
"Elena," Marco said without turning his head, his gaze locked entirely on the doll's porcelain face. "Who delivered this package this morning?"
"It... it was an anonymous donation from the charity foundation," Elena stammered, swallowing hard. "I checked the box myself. It’s just an old collectible, Marco. You’re being paranoid."
Marco gently set the doll on the mahogany table, positioning his broad body directly between Lily and the doorway. His ring tapped against the polished wood—a signal. From the corridor shadows, Marco's head of security, Dante, appeared silently, stepping up behind the officer.
"Officer Miller," Marco murmured, his eyes finally shifting toward the uniform. "I know every patrol cop assigned to this district by their badge number and their first name. But I don’t know you. And real cops don't turn off their body cameras before entering a private residence."

Miller’s hand twitched toward his belt, but Dante was faster, pinning the man’s arm against the oak trim with brutal efficiency.
