CHAPTER 5: THE CRACKED SHELL

Days turned into a cautious routine. Marco rose before sunrise, chopping wood and checking the perimeter sensors, while Dante monitored shortwave frequencies. Yet the true battle wasn't outside in the woods; it was inside the cabin.
Lily had stopped speaking. The trauma of discovering her beloved doll was a spy tool had fractured her fragile sense of reality. She wouldn't touch toys, she refused to look into mirrors, and she constantly checked the dark corners of the room with wide, anxious eyes.
One afternoon, Marco sat down on the wooden floor opposite her. He had removed his heavy suit and tactical vest, wearing only a plain charcoal sweater.
"Lily," he said gently, sliding a piece of blank paper and a charcoal pencil toward her. "You don't have to talk. But you can draw whatever is in your head."
Lily looked at the pencil, her fingers hovering hesitantly. Slowly, she picked it up and began sketching. She didn't draw flowers or houses. She drew an enormous, menacing eye surrounded by dark thorns.
Marco’s heart ached. He reached out, not pulling the paper away, but picking up another pencil. Beneath the giant eye, Marco drew a sturdy, tall oak tree with thick branches sheltering a tiny bird.
"The world has ugly things, Lily," Marco said softly. "Things meant to frighten us. But as long as the tree stands, the storm can never touch the bird."

Lily stared at his drawing, then reached out, placing her small palm over his scarred hand.
