CHAPTER 13: TRUTH AND RECKONING

Forty-eight hours later, the United States Attorney’s Office held a landmark press conference in Manhattan. The unsealed "David Vance Ledger" had detonated the largest organized crime syndicate on the eastern seaboard, leading to the immediate arrest of seventy-two high-ranking figures, corrupt officials, and cartel associates.

Marco spent eight hours inside the federal building in Albany, giving full depositions. Because he had cooperated fully with federal authorities and turned over all assets connected to the cartel, the Justice Department granted him full immunity and placed Lily under permanent, legal guardianship with him under a new, clean identity.

Before leaving Albany, Marco visited a small interrogation room where Elena sat in handcuffs. She looked haggard, stripped of her wealthy demeanor, weeping silently.

"I didn't mean for it to go that far, Marco," she sobbed. "They threatened my life."

Marco stood on the other side of the glass partition. "Fear makes people do terrible things, Elena. But love makes you endure them. You chose yourself over a child who trusted you."

"Will I ever see her again?"

"No," Marco said firmly. "Lily deserves a family that protects her, not one that sells her."

Without another word, Marco turned his back on the past and walked out into the crisp morning sunlight.
