Chapter 7: Confronting the Ghost

The air in the guest suite instantly turned ice-cold. Elena’s sharp blue eyes swept over the room, taking in Clara sitting comfortably in the armchair and Julian standing protectively nearby. The sight of her estranged husband acting as a caretaker for a pregnant domestic servant fueled a white-hot rage deep within Elena’s soul. She stepped past the hesitant security guards, her high heels clicking aggressively against the plush carpet.
“So this is where the master of the house spends his time—playing nursemaid to a common thief who breaks family heirlooms,” Elena sneered, her voice dripping with venom. “You think you can cast me out like unwanted trash for this little nobody?”
“Elena, you were ordered to stay away from this property,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he stepped directly into her path, blocking her access to Clara. “Your presence here is a direct violation of the separation agreement your own brother reviewed this afternoon.”
“That agreement is a joke, and you know it!” Elena shouted, losing her fragile grip on aristocratic composure. She pointed a manicured finger directly at Clara, who had instinctively pulled a blanket over her lap, trembling slightly at the sudden confrontation. “She trapped you, Julian! Girls like her crawl out of the slums looking for a wealthy savior to fix their pathetic lives. She probably broke that antique mirror on purpose to orchestrate this exact sympathy play!”
“That is a lie!” Clara cried out, unable to remain silent any longer as her character and dignity were unjustly dragged through the mud. Tears welled in her eyes, but this time they were fueled by righteous anger rather than pure terror. “I was working honestly to earn my living. I tripped on the worn hallway rug. I would never destroy anything on purpose.”
“Silence, you ungrateful little parasite!” Elena snapped, lunging forward with a raised hand as if she intended to strike Clara across the face.
In a fraction of a second, Julian’s reflexes took over. He caught Elena’s wrist mid-air with an iron grip, his dark eyes blazing with an intensity that made even his fiercely proud wife recoil in shock. The room fell dead silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the enraged socialite.

“Never raise your hand in my presence again, Elena,” Julian commanded, his voice shaking with restrained fury. He lowered her arm slowly, pushing her back toward the doorway with quiet authority. “You have crossed every conceivable boundary of human decency. Your cruelty is no longer welcome under my roof, in my city, or anywhere near my life.”
Elena stared at him, her chest heaving as the absolute finality of his words sank into her consciousness. She realized that her wealth, her social standing, and her threats were utterly powerless against a man driven by moral clarity and fierce protection of the innocent. Without another word, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, her pride shattered beyond repair.
