Chapter 4: Unspoken Truths

Morning sunlight filtered gently through the sheer curtains of the guest suite, casting a warm golden glow across the plush carpet. Clara woke from a restless, dream-filled sleep, instantly pressing a protective hand against her belly. The baby stirred in response, a reassuring flutter that brought a tired smile to her face. She sat up slowly, noticing that a fresh set of comfortable lounge clothes had been left neatly folded on the armchair alongside her freshly laundered uniform.

A soft knock sounded at the door before it creaked open, revealing Mrs. Higgins holding a tray loaded with nourishing breakfast items—scrambled eggs, toast, and fresh fruit. The older woman smiled warmly, stepping into the room with maternal grace.

“Good morning, Clara. How are you feeling after such a dreadful night?” Mrs. Higgins asked, setting the tray across Clara’s lap.

“Much better, thank you, Mrs. Higgins,” Clara replied gratefully, inhaling the comforting aroma of the food. “My mind is clearer, though I worry about what comes next. Mrs. Vance will not simply let this go. She has powerful connections and a fierce temper.”

“Let her rage,” Mrs. Higgins said firmly, pulling up a chair to sit beside the bed. “Mr. Sterling has made his stance entirely clear. He spent the entire night in his study reviewing the household staff contracts and financial records. Something inside him has fundamentally shifted, Clara. He is no longer willing to play the dutiful husband to a woman whose cruelty knows no bounds.”

Clara ate in thoughtful silence, processing the heavy implications of the housekeeper’s words. Julian Sterling was one of the city's most prominent real estate developers—a man known for his brilliant intellect, sharp business acumen, and relentless drive. Yet, behind closed doors, he had been trapped in a high-society marriage orchestrated by corporate boardrooms and family expectations rather than genuine affection.

Just as Mrs. Higgins finished clearing away the breakfast tray, the door opened quietly, and Julian walked into the room. He wore a crisp dark suit, his tie neatly knotted, looking every bit the commanding executive. However, the severe tension in his posture had softened noticeably as he looked toward Clara.

“Good morning, Clara. I hope you slept well,” Julian said, offering a polite, reassuring nod. “Mrs. Higgins, thank you for looking after her.”

“Always, Mr. Sterling,” the housekeeper replied respectfully, gathering the tray and stepping out of the room to give them privacy.

Julian pulled up a chair, sitting down with a deliberate calm. He rested his forearms on his knees, looking directly into Clara’s eyes. “I wanted to speak with you before I leave for the downtown office. I have arranged for a private physician, Dr. Harrison, to come by this afternoon to conduct a thorough prenatal examination. I want to ensure you and the baby suffered no lingering harm from yesterday’s fall.”

“Mr. Sterling, you do not need to go to such lengths for me,” Clara said, her cheeks flushing with modest embarrassment. “I am just an employee. Medical care is my responsibility.”

“While you are under this roof, your health and safety are my absolute priority,” Julian countered firmly, leaving no room for argument. “Furthermore, I have instructed our legal counsel to draft formal severance papers for Elena. Our marriage is over. I refuse to live another day under the shadow of her cruelty.”
