Chapter 3: Safe Harbor

The guest suite was a sanctuary of soft neutral tones, plush carpeting, and warm lamplight—a stark contrast to the cold, intimidating white marble of the grand hallway. Julian gently guided Clara toward the edge of a velvet armchair, ensuring she was comfortable before standing upright. He walked over to a small mahogany table and poured a fresh glass of water, handing it to her with steady hands. Clara took the glass, her fingers still slightly trembling, and took a small, hesitant sip to calm her frayed nerves.

“Drink slowly,” Julian instructed kindly, pulling up a nearby chair to sit opposite her at a respectful distance. “I have already instructed Mrs. Higgins to prepare some warm tea and bring up a proper medical kit. We need to check if you have any cuts from the glass.”

“I am fine, really, Mr. Sterling,” Clara protested softly, keeping her gaze lowered toward the floor. “You have already done too much for me. Mrs. Vance was right about one thing; I am just a maid. I should not cause trouble between you and your wife.”

“Elena is my wife in name only, and her behavior was completely inexcusable,” Julian said, his voice carrying a firm, unyielding conviction. “No one in this house has the right to treat another human being with such cruelty. Class status does not grant anyone the license to terrorize the vulnerable. You are safe here, Clara. I want you to remember that.”

Clara nodded slowly, letting his words sink into her weary soul. For months, she had endured subtle slights and harsh demands from Elena, keeping her head down because she desperately needed the steady paycheck to pay for prenatal care and basic living expenses. Being an unwed mother in a judgmental society meant she had few allies and even fewer resources. The unexpected protection from the master of the house felt both miraculous and terrifying.

A gentle knock at the heavy oak door interrupted their quiet conversation. Mrs. Higgins, the head housekeeper—a warm, maternal woman in her late fifties with silver-streaked hair—stepped into the room carrying a silver tray with steaming herbal tea and medical supplies. Her kind eyes immediately softened when she saw Clara sitting safely in the armchair, though the lingering distress on the young maid's face did not escape her notice.

“Oh, my dear child,” Mrs. Higgins murmured, hurrying over to set the tray down before kneeling beside Clara to inspect her hands and knees for hidden glass shards. “I heard the commotion from the kitchen. That woman has finally crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed.”

“Is she gone?” Clara asked anxiously, wincing slightly as Mrs. Higgins gently brushed away a tiny speck of dust from her uniform.

“Mr. Sterling had her escorted out of the main estate,” Mrs. Higgins confirmed with a quiet sense of satisfaction. “You focus entirely on yourself and that precious little one. I will look after you tonight, Clara. No one will bother you in this room.”

Julian stood up, giving both women space. He knew that removing Elena was only the first step in addressing the deep-seated rot within his household and his marriage. He walked to the window, staring out into the sprawling, manicured gardens illuminated by security lights. The night was dark and quiet, but Julian’s mind was racing with plans to ensure Clara’s absolute protection and to permanently dismantle the toxic dynamic Elena had weaponized for far too long.
