Chapter 11: The Unyielding Shield

Beatrice’s words hung in the air like a poisoned dagger, designed to cut deep into Clara’s deepest insecurities. For a fleeting second, the old fears resurfaced—the haunting reminder of her orphan background, her lack of status, and the vast chasm between her world and Julian’s. Yet, as she looked into the older woman’s calculating eyes, Clara felt a surge of maternal strength override her fear. She remembered Julian’s unwavering support, his fierce defense in that very hallway, and the genuine respect he had shown her every single day since.
“You are wrong,” Clara said, her voice steady, clear, and devoid of tremor. “Mr. Sterling is a man of honor and integrity—qualities your family clearly knows nothing about. He protects human beings, not social status. Now, get out of this house before I call security to physically remove you.”
Beatrice’s face flushed with deep indignation, her carefully maintained composure cracking under the audacity of a mere maid standing up to her. Before the matriarch could raise her voice to launch another verbal assault, heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the marble staircase.
Julian rounded the corner, having arrived home early from a board meeting. His eyes widened with shock upon seeing Beatrice Vance standing in his foyer confronting Clara. The temperature in the room dropped instantly to freezing as an aura of absolute fury radiated from his tall frame.
“Beatrice,” Julian said, his voice a low, dangerous growl that commanded instant silence. He closed the distance between them in seconds, positioning himself squarely between his former mother-in-law and Clara. “What is the meaning of this?”
“Julian, thank goodness,” Beatrice instantly switched tactics, adopting a falsely sympathetic tone. “I came here out of family concern to see what kind of manipulative opportunist has bewitched you into throwing away your marriage and social reputation. This girl is—”
“This girl is under my absolute protection, and this house is strictly off-limits to every member of the Vance family,” Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through her manipulation like a razor-sharp blade. He pointed firmly toward the front doors. “You have exactly thirty seconds to walk out of those doors, Beatrice, or I will ensure your family’s remaining corporate holdings are systematically dismantled through every legal channel at my disposal.”
Beatrice stared at him, realizing with absolute horror that Julian was entirely serious. The Sterling empire was more than a match for the fading Vance dynasty, and Julian’s resolve was unbreakable. With a look of pure venom directed at both of them, Beatrice spun around on her designer heels and stormed out of the mansion, slamming the heavy oak doors behind her.

Julian immediately turned to Clara, his expression softening into deep concern as he gently checked her shoulders. “Are you alright, Clara? Did she threaten you?”
“I am fine, Julian,” Clara whispered, exhaling a breath she didn't realize she was holding. She looked up at him with profound gratitude in her eyes. “She tried to make me doubt your intentions, but I knew she was lying.”
