Chapter 5: The Legal Storm

Downtown, in the towering glass-and-steel headquarters of Sterling Development, Julian sat behind his expansive mahogany desk, staring blankly at the Manhattan skyline. The morning sunlight glinted off the skyscrapers, but his mind remained anchored miles away at the estate, ensuring Clara was safe under Mrs. Higgins' watchful care. The intercom buzzed softly, breaking his intense concentration.

“Mr. Sterling, your attorney, Arthur Vance, is on line one,” his executive assistant announced calmly.

Julian narrowed his eyes. Arthur Vance was not only his corporate legal counsel but also Elena’s older brother. The connection was dangerously tangled, designed to protect family assets rather than ensure personal justice. Julian pressed the speaker button with deliberate slowness.

“Arthur,” Julian said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth.

“Julian, what on earth is going on?” Arthur’s voice boomed through the speaker, tight with agitation and corporate defensiveness. “Elena called me in absolute hysterics this morning claiming you threw her out of her own home over a clumsy maid. You cannot simply lock out my sister and expect there won't be immediate legal and social repercussions.”

“Elena physically assaulted a pregnant employee inside my home, caused extensive property damage, and created a hostile, dangerous environment,” Julian replied coldly, every word measured and precise. “I have security footage from the hallway cameras confirming every detail of her violent outburst. If you wish to contest my decision in court, Arthur, I will gladly submit that footage to the civil courts and file for an immediate restraining order.”

A heavy silence stretched across the phone line. Arthur knew Julian’s reputation well; when the developer made a calculated decision backed by indisputable evidence, there was no bending his will.

“Surely this can be handled with discretion,” Arthur moderated his tone, realizing his sister had crossed a line even he could not easily defend. “A quiet separation, a generous financial settlement, handled privately through our respective firms without dragging the Sterling name through the tabloids.”

“The financial settlement will be fair, but the separation is non-negotiable,” Julian stated firmly. “Papers will be delivered to your office by noon. Do not attempt to contact Clara or interfere with the estate staff again, Arthur. This conversation is finished.”

Julian clicked the intercom off before Arthur could muster a reply. He leaned back in his leather chair, exhaling a long breath of relief. For years, he had compromised his personal integrity to maintain a peaceful facade for the sake of his corporate image. Standing up for Clara had awakened a dormant sense of purpose within him—a realization that true strength lay in protecting the defenseless rather than preserving hollow societal illusions.

Back at the estate, true to his word, Dr. Harrison—a kind, elderly physician with silver hair and a gentle bedside manner—arrived right on schedule. Mrs. Higgins escorted the doctor to the guest suite, where Clara sat waiting with mild apprehension. The examination was thorough and professional, culminating in the comforting sound of a strong, steady heartbeat echoing through the quiet room via a digital Doppler monitor.

“Mother and baby are both remarkably healthy and resilient,” Dr. Harrison announced with a warm smile, packing his instruments into his leather bag. “Just ensure she avoids strenuous physical activity and emotional stress for the remainder of the pregnancy.”
