Chapter 8: The Chase in the Dark

The wailing sirens sliced through the quiet suburban night, growing louder with every passing second. Maya bolted across the dew-soaked lawn, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the cold air burned her lungs. The portable hard drive in her pocket felt heavy, like a ticking bomb against her thigh. She knew she couldn't run back to the park to meet Detective Vance; the police cars were already converging on that side of the neighborhood. Arthur had clearly set the trap in motion, orchestrating a multi-layered frame-up designed to ensure she had nowhere left to run.

She ducked behind a row of thick hedges lining the neighbor's property, crouching low in the shadows as a marked squad car cruised slowly past the house, its red and blue lightbars painting the asphalt in flashing crimson and azure. Through the windshield, Maya caught a glimpse of her father sitting in the passenger seat, pointing frantically toward their house while speaking into a radio mic with a practiced, convincing expression of utter devastation. The sheer audacity of his acting made her stomach turn.

A rustle in the bushes behind her made Maya freeze. She spun around, her heart leaping into her throat.

A hand clamped firmly over her mouth before she could scream, dragging her backward into the deep shadows beneath a towering pine tree. Maya thrashed wildly, striking out with her elbows, but a familiar, gravelly voice hissed in her ear.

"Quiet! It's me. Stop fighting," Detective Vance whispered urgently, releasing his grip just enough for her to gasp for air.

Maya collapsed against the rough bark of the pine tree, clutching her hoodie pocket. "They... they killed Lucas," she panted, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "My mother killed him with a wrench in the basement server room. They're pinning it on me. The police are already here."

Vance’s eyes widened in shock, the tough demeanor cracking slightly. "Clara? I thought Arthur handled the dirty work. That changes everything. The precinct isn't just compromised; it's a full execution squad." He reached into his trench coat and pulled out a sleek, encrypted satellite phone. "Did you get the drive?"

Maya pulled the small black rectangular hard drive from her pocket and handed it to him. "Yes. All the shell company ledgers, the blackmail files, everything is on here."

Vance snatched the drive, slipping it into his coat pocket with a grim nod. "Good. We need to move right now. My unmarked car is parked two blocks over by the old rail yard. Once we upload these files to the federal task force's secure drop, your parents won't just lose their money—they'll spend the rest of their lives behind bars."

Maya hesitated for a split second, studying the detective in the dim moonlight. Something about the way he gripped the drive felt a fraction too eager, a fraction too rehearsed. Before she could voice her sudden, gnawing doubt, the beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness directly toward their hiding spot, accompanied by a booming voice from the end of the driveway.

"Freeze! Police department! Drop whatever you're holding!"
