Chapter 10: The Hidden Ally

The cold barrel of the detective's gun gleamed menacingly under the faint amber glow of a distant rail yard security light. Maya’s mind raced at light speed, calculating every possible angle of escape. Vance stood too close, his stance rigid and professional, leaving zero margin for a physical disarm. She needed a distraction, something to break his focus even for a fraction of a second.

"You really think my father is going to share his empire with a hired gun?" Maya asked, keeping her voice steady and injecting a sharp note of mockery into her tone. "Arthur has a history of tying up loose ends. Ask the last partner he had in the city development bureau—the one who mysteriously vanished five years ago."

Vance’s hand twitched slightly on the grip of the pistol, a microscopic flicker of doubt crossing his hardened features. "Shut up. Arthur doesn't know about—"

Before Vance could finish his sentence, a blinding pair of high-beam headlights suddenly flooded the rail yard from the access road behind them. A massive black SUV roared around the corner of the rusted warehouse, its tires screeching against the gravel as it barreled straight toward their position at breakneck speed.

Vance whipped around, momentarily distracted by the blinding glare, firing a wild shot toward the oncoming vehicle.

It was all the opening Maya needed. She dropped low to the ground, swept her leg hard against Vance’s ankles, and sent the corrupt detective sprawling hard onto the gravel. The satellite phone flew from his grip, skittering across the loose stones into the deep shadows beneath a nearby boxcar.

The SUV slammed on its brakes, sliding sideways in a cloud of dust and gravel before coming to a dead stop just ten feet away. The driver’s side door swung open instantly.

A figure stepped out from the cab, silhouetted against the glaring headlights. It wasn't Arthur, and it wasn't Clara. As the figure stepped into the side light, Maya’s breath hitched in sheer disbelief.

It was David, Arthur’s estranged younger brother—Maya’s uncle—whom the family had spent her entire childhood claiming was dead or institutionalized for mental instability. David looked older, his hair dusted with gray, wearing a heavy canvas work jacket and carrying a battered laptop bag, but his eyes held the exact same dark intensity as Maya’s.

"Get in the truck, Maya! Now!" David yelled over the roaring engine.

Vance scrambled to his feet, cursing furiously, and raised his gun toward David. But before the detective could squeeze the trigger, David whipped out a heavy-duty tactical flare, ignited it with a sharp snap, and hurled it directly at Vance’s face. The blinding magnesium fire exploded in a blinding flash of red light and thick smoke, forcing the detective to scream and shield his eyes.

Maya didn't hesitate a second longer. She sprinted across the gravel, threw open the passenger door of the SUV, and vaulted inside as David slammed the vehicle into reverse, tires spinning furiously as they rocketed out of the rail yard into the safety of the dark highway.
