Chapter 4: The Detective’s Warning

Detective Vance held up his hands slowly to show he meant no harm, keeping his dark eyes fixed on Maya with an expression of profound urgency. The cold autumn wind rustled the dry leaves around their feet, accentuating the eerie isolation of the park. Maya’s mind raced, trying to connect the dots between a crooked local detective and the sudden, violent implosion of her family.

"My father is an accountant," Maya said defensively, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. "He works for the city. Everyone respects him."

"That's the carefully crafted illusion," Vance replied, stepping closer until he was standing just beneath the rusted playground canopy. He lowered his voice to a harsh whisper. "Arthur hasn't worked a legitimate municipal ledger in five years. He runs a shell corporation that launders kickbacks for real estate developers who bulldoze historical districts. Your brother Lucas didn't just gamble away pocket change; he accessed the master server and downloaded encrypted files to blackmail your father. When Arthur found out, they needed a scapegoat. They chose you because you were the only one asking too many questions about where the family's sudden wealth was coming from."

Maya felt as though the ground beneath her sneakers had just vanished. Every family vacation, every expensive car Arthur had bought last year, the sudden remodeling of the kitchen—it all flashed before her eyes, suddenly tainted by a sickening criminality. But the deepest cut wasn't the stolen money or the corporate corruption; it was the chilling realization that her own mother and brother had willingly fed her to the wolves to save themselves.

"If what you're saying is true, why are you telling me?" Maya asked, narrowing her eyes at the detective. "You're police. Why didn't you arrest him?"

Vance let out a bitter, humorless chuckle. "Because half the department is on his payroll, including my direct captain. The only hard evidence linking Arthur to the offshore accounts is stored on a local terminal inside that house—specifically, inside the locked basement darkroom."

Maya’s hand instinctively brushed against the heavy brass key hidden in her hoodie pocket. Vance noticed the micro-movement instantly, his gaze locking onto her jacket.

"You have the key, don't you?" Vance asked, his voice dropping to an urgent pitch. "Listen to me, Maya. You need to get back inside that house tonight, retrieve the hard drive from the basement, and meet me at the old rail yard by dawn, or your family won't just disown you—they'll make sure you never wake up."
