Chapter 2: The Sidewalk Exile

The heavy oak front door slammed shut with a deafening rattle, sealing off the only home Maya had ever known. She stood shivering on the damp concrete sidewalk, the biting evening wind slicing right through her thin grey zip-up hoodie. The black trash bag felt impossibly heavy against her legs, containing nothing more than three faded shirts, two pairs of worn jeans, and a framed photograph of her grandmother that Clara had practically ripped from her bedside table.

Maya pulled her blue top tighter around herself, her teeth chattering uncontrollably. Passersby on the suburban street avoided her gaze, pulling their coats tighter as they hurried toward warm, lighted kitchens. She was completely alone, cast out by the very people who were supposed to protect her. The betrayal burned hotter than the autumn chill. They had blamed her for the missing corporate funds from Arthur’s desk, but Maya knew for an absolute fact that Lucas had been gambling online for months using their father’s credentials. She had seen the browser history, and she had handwritten notes stashed in her school locker as undeniable proof.

She crouched down beside her meager belongings, wiping a stray tear from her cheek with the sleeve of her hoodie. She couldn't just wander the streets, and she refused to let Lucas and Clara win by default. Her mind raced back to the foyer, to the heavy brass key she had managed to slip off her mother's key ring during the frantic argument. That key unlocked the basement darkroom—a room Arthur kept bolted twenty-four hours a day, claiming it was just old storage. But Maya remembered hearing muffled, frantic typing coming from behind that heavy wooden door late at night, long after everyone else was asleep.

Her phone buzzed violently in her front pocket. With trembling fingers, she pulled it out and stared at the glowing screen. A text message from an unknown number flashed in the dark: “Leave town tonight, Maya. If you value your life, don’t go looking for what’s in the basement.”
