Chapter 7: The Trap Closes

Maya stumbled backward, her hip slamming hard against the corner of the server rack. The metallic taste of fear flooded her mouth. The woman standing before her wasn't a grieving mother; she was a cold-blooded predator protecting an empire built on extortion and ruin.
"You... you killed him," Maya whispered, her voice shaking violently as she stared from Clara’s bloodless expression down to Lucas’s lifeless body slumped over the desk. "Lucas was your son! How could you?"
Clara didn't flinch. She took another slow, deliberate step forward, the heavy iron wrench glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights of the server room. "Lucas was greedy, undisciplined, and a liability to everything your father and I built over the past decade. He tried to blackmail us for a larger cut of the developers' payoff. He signed his own death warrant the moment he threatened to go to the federal authorities."
Maya’s mind raced frantically, searching for an escape route. The only exit was past Clara, and the heavy steel door was the bottleneck. Her hand brushed against the server desk behind her, feeling the cold casing of the main hard drive Vance had asked her to retrieve. Without thinking, Maya grabbed the edge of the portable drive, ripped the USB cable from the back of the smoking terminal, and shoved it deep into her hoodie pocket.
Clara’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as she spotted the movement. "Hand it over, Maya. Don't be a fool."
"You framed me," Maya said, her voice steadying with a sudden surge of righteous fury that cut through her terror. "You and Arthur let me take the fall for the missing funds so the police would look the other way when Lucas started stealing. And now you're going to pin Lucas's murder on me too."
"Smart girl," Clara replied coldly, raising the wrench. "It’s a neat narrative. The troubled, rebellious teenager snaps, kills her brother in a fit of rage, and flees into the night. Arthur is already calling the precinct to report a break-in."

Before Clara could lunge, Maya grabbed a heavy plastic keyboard from the desk and hurled it directly at her mother’s face. Clara dodged, but the delay bought Maya the critical second she needed. She ducked low, bolted past her mother with explosive speed, and sprinted out of the server room into the dark basement corridor.
Footsteps thudded heavily behind her as Clara pursued with terrifying agility. Maya scrambled up the wooden cellar stairs, threw open the storm doors, and burst out into the cool, damp night air just as distant police sirens began to wail in the direction of the street.
